Each Autumn, Vermont’s Green Mountains are ablaze in shades of red, yellow, amber, orange and gold, with a vibrancy you’ll not find anywhere else. Join us for the Vermont Autumn Walking Experience, and enjoy the season's glory by immersing yourself in the rural landscape as you meander alongside babbling brooks, explore forest trails, and stroll through picture-perfect New England villages. Our program features a series of spectacular walking tours and an array of unique, fun-filled classes that promote holistic healthy living and engage your senses.

The Program
On the walking tours, you’ll explore northern Vermont with our knowledgeable and friendly guides who are attuned to your well-being and comfort. Move at your own pace by choosing from a daily selection ranging from high energy walks to gentle strolls.

In addition to our walking tours, each day features a choice of enjoyable and educational classes. To experience the natural beauty of Autumn in Vermont, take part in our landscape photography class, mushroom hunting adventure or outdoor nature journaling class. Get your heart pumping by trying cardio drumming, aqua-aerobics or Zumba.

For relaxation, choose a massage class or guided meditation. Culinary adventurers may savor a workshop on healthy snacks or an evening outdoor "serenity stroll" by candlelight with a delicious dessert at trail's end.

Whatever your interest are, all you have to do is try one walk and one class per day to get a great value from our Vermont Autumn Walking Experience.

Walks- A 1-2 hour walk involving mild to moderate exercise.
Wikes- A little longer in duration, up to 3 hours, and moderate to demanding exercise.
Sneakers or other sturdy footwear is essential for all walks.

8:15 am - 8:45 am — Energy Stretching and Body Movement

Get energized for the day and wake your muscles up with this relaxing morning routine. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green.

9:00 am — Moving On Up Walk
Moderate intensity walk on our wooded trails; 2-3 miles. Intermediate. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green. Thursday walks meet at the Welcome Sign.

9:00 am — Push to New Heights Walk
High intensity walk on our wooded trails; 3-4 miles. Most difficult. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green. Thursday walks meet at the Welcome Sign.

9:00 am — Just Get Moving Walk
A short health and wellness classroom session followed by a low intensity 1-1.5 mile walk on our wooded trails. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at Morse Highlands Day Lodge.
   Classroom topic: Heart Rate Monitors & Optimum Exercise.

11:00 am — Pickleball A cross between badminton, tennis and ping pong, Pickleball is a game that is easy to learn and fun to play! Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the North Hill Tennis Courts.

11:00 am — Disc Golf for Beginners
A fun and informative hour-long session for all ages on the basics of disc golf. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green.

2:00 pm — Covered Bridge Walk
Lamoille Rail Trail: An easy stroll along the Lamoille River to visit a historic covered bridge. On your return, we will walk down Main Street in the quaint village of Jeffersonville. Approximately 2.5 miles. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Transportation provided. Meet for shuttle at the Welcome Sign.

2:00 pm — Tasting Teas
Relax and savor the subtle scent of the tea fragrance and flavor in this class where you will learn about several varieties of loose leaf teas. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

3:00 pm — Mushroom Hunting Adventure Walk
Explore the woods at Smuggs in search of mushrooms! This educational walk will teach you how to locate and identify a variety of wild mushrooms, such as chanterelles, boletes and morels. Walk will range between 1-2 miles and may include some off-trail exploration. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green.

4:00 pm — Aromatherapy & Essential Oils
Make your own products for relaxation: This fun class will teach you the therapeutic properties of many essential oils. You will have the option of making an aromatherapy roll-on or room spray to take home. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

6:00 pm — Zumba Gold
Move to the beat of Latin and international music in an easy to follow, low impact version of the popular fitness class. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

11:00 am - 4:00 pm — Scenic Missisquoi Rail Trail Walk & Boston Post Dairy
Pack your lunch and travel north on our shuttle to the “Dairy Capital of the World.” Walk along an old railroad bed that has been converted into a four season recreation trail while enjoying the meandering Missisquoi River, sweeping views of Jay Peak, and scenic working farms. Visit the working farm and award winning cheese makers at Boston Post Dairy; get a sneak peek at the cheese making process and shop their store with an abundance of local products. Approximately 2.5 miles. Easiest, meet at the Welcome Sign. Transportation Provided. Trip will return to Village by 4:00 pm.

11:00 am — Make & Take
Healthy Snacks: Join us in the kitchen as we make some quick and easy tasty snacks. We will send you home with some things to nibble on and recipes, too. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

1:00 pm — Swedish Massage Class
A great way to learn the basics of massage and enjoy yourself at the same time. Taught by Smugglers' Mountain Massage Center therapists. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

2:00 pm — Vermont Maple Walk
Enjoy a leisurely walk through the woods while learning to identify the different types of maple trees and techniques involved in maple sugaring - a time honored Vermont tradition. Bring home a sample of pure maple syrup! Approximately 1 mile. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green.

3:00 pm — Shiatsu Facial Rejuvenating Acupressure Class
Our staff massage therapists will teach you techniques for light head, facial and neck massage as well as an extensive acupressure sequence to use at home for extended relief and relaxation. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

4:00 pm — Apple Walk
Join us on this lazy stroll through the local countryside. Enjoy a “finish line” treat of fresh Vermont grown apples. Approximately 1 mile. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green.

Walk through a covered bridge and follow along the banks of the Brewster River to the impressive gorge. Continue along the forested path to reach an open meadow with breathtaking mountain views. This walk is loaded with photo opportunities! Approx. 2.5 miles. Intermediate. Meet for shuttle at the Welcome Sign.

2:00 pm — Organic Farm Tour & Soup Stop Walk
Take a walking tour around picturesque Knee Deep Farm. Meet the farmers and learn about their certified organic farm. Then enjoy a bowl of warm, garden fresh soup and homemade bread. Approximately 1 mile. Easiest; meet at the Welcome Sign. Transportation provided.

2:00 pm — Walk & Watercolor
Learn how to set up an outdoor plein air studio and capture the beauty of Autumn at Smuggs using opaque and transparent watercolor. All materials provided. Less than 1 mile. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

4:00 pm — Aqua Aerobics
A great way to get a low impact workout in our heated pool! Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Mountainside Pool until September 22, meet at the Courtside Pool beginning September 23.

4:00 pm — Drawing on Nature
Art Journaling: Get started on sketching and/or writing about leaves, trees, rivers, butterflies, birds, mountains, hikes … all or anything in your own style in your own little journal. All materials provided. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

6:30 pm — Sweets & Serenity Stroll
Join us for an enchanting evening stroll through lantern lit woods to a rustic pavilion alight with the glow of candles. Sample some sweets and enjoy apple cider by the light of a bonfire. Approximately 1 mile. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet for shuttle at the Welcome Sign.

11:00 am — Gentle Yoga Relax, slow down and tune in during this gentle yoga practice. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

11:00 am — Gourmet French Winery Experience Visit the Boyden Farm in Cambridge for a tour of the winery and tasting of their own wines, served with gourmet cheeses, fresh fruits and breads. Transportation provided. Ends October 10, 2013. Meet for shuttle at the Welcome Sign.

2:00 pm — Nordic Walking
A great low impact, fun physical activity for everyone! Learn how to walk with Nordic poles and significantly improve your health and fitness. Approximately 2 miles. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green.

2:00 pm — Cardio Drumming
This fitness class combines the benefits of a traditional physical fitness program with the mental activity of using music and rhythm. Join us for this fun class that uses yoga balls and drum sticks. Beginning September 20. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

3:00 pm — Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Tasting
Meet at the Scoop Shop in the Village Center to learn about the history and lore of Vermont’s most famous company. Enjoy samples of different flavors to find your favorite! Meet at the Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop in the Village Center.

4:00 pm — Sensory Discovery Walk
We rely heavily on our eyes to provide us with information about the world. On this walk, experiment with smells, sounds and taste and touch to learn about the natural environment. Approximately 1 mile. Easiest, suitable for all abilities. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green.

11:00 am - 3:00 pm — Apple Picking & Snowflake Bentley Field Trip
What better way to enjoy the Fall than with an apple picking adventure! Pack your lunch and hop on our shuttle for a trip to Chapin Orchard, where you can choose from several varieties of apples to pick and bring home. Shop the orchard store for local honey, maple syrup, and apple goodies. Apple picking is weather dependent after Columbus Day. From there we will visit the picturesque Old Red Mill to view the exhibit of Snowflake Bentley’s spectacular photos of individual snowflakes. This trip will be topped off with a short, easy walk at Mills Riverside Park, where sweeping views of Mount Mansfield abound. Meet at the Welcome Sign. Transportation provided. Trip will return to Village by 4:00 pm.

11:00 am — Pesto, Oils & Vinegars
Indulge in this taste explosion using fresh herbs and spices! Be prepared to go home with lots of goodies, ideas and recipes. Meet at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge.

2:00 pm — Forest Heritage Nature Wike
Enjoy a taste of Vermont’s local history as you explore the fields and forests surrounding Smuggs. Find the black bear’s favorite trees and discover signs of deer and moose. Approximately 2 miles. Intermediate. Meet at the Gazebo on the Village Green.

4:00 pm — Vermont Maple Walk
Enjoy a leisurely walk through the woods while learning to identify the different types of maple trees and techniques involved in maple sugaring - a time honored Vermont tradition. Our Vacation Package Option:
Add our spacious, well-appointed condominium lodging to your Vermont Autumn Walking Experience. You'll be lodged in one of our cozy, family-style, condominium homes, each with fully equipped kitchen facilities. All have cable TV, telephones, linens, cookware, dishware, glassware, utensils and in-home or in-building access to laundry facilities. Internet service is available for a nominal fee. You’ll have free access to our heated swimming pool and evening live entertainment.

For your convenience we also offer in-Resort dining and shopping. Join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or pick up something in our Country Store to eat in your home. We proudly offer a selection of Vermont made specialty items, including cheese, chocolate and maple products, and wine, beer, and spirits.
