Smugglers' Notch Vermont - Press Releases
Winter 2007-2008
Take a Winter Walk in the Woods at Smugglers' Notch Resort
-Walking is easy, fun and relaxing when guides lead the way -A different route is offered each day -Walking is ideal for activity variety
The scoop: Winter Walking is an organized activity recommended for guests 18 and older who want to experience nature and the outdoors. Guides offer tips on winter walking techniques and make the walk come alive with historical lore about the region and insights into the local ecology and environment.
Guests may join in for a single day or every day for the 10:00 a.m. meet and two hour walk. The group meets at Teen Alley for a hot beverage and chat about the day's outing. Each participant will be provided with Yaktrax to wear over snow boots for improved traction, trekking poles, and a daypack for use during the walk. Appropriate dress for the outdoors and for light to moderate outdoor exercise is essential.
Winter Walking is for anyone who would like to enjoy the outdoors in winter in the company of like-minded enthusiasts or for those keen for gentle but invigorating movement. The program is ideal for sports enthusiasts who have simply decided to take a break from skiing or snowboarding for the day.
The selection of walks range from an introductory outing on Mondays and Saturdays to the Meadows in Winter Wike and the Winter Woods Wike (a wike is a cross between a walk and a hike) to a more vigorous Nordic Walking trek. The Explore the Notch Wike takes guests into Smugglers' Notch Pass with its rich history as a smuggling route and its unique geological formations. It is from this pass that the Resort derives its name.
The buzz: -"No special skills are required for the walking program ... just the desire to experience nature and the outdoors." -Zeke Zucker, director of the Resort's Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Adventure Center
-"Winter Walking has consistently proven popular with our guests. I think people enjoy the camaraderie of the group and the opportunity to really take in the breathtaking winter scenery." -Marge McIntosh, activities director
-"We want everyone to be able to participate and enjoy the beauty of Vermont at the leisurely pace of a biped, so we've included this in our Club Smugglers' Advantage Package roster of activities." -Nancy Illemann, marketing director
