Don’t Like the Weather, Wait a Minute.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERASAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERAToday was another great day at Smugglers’ Notch. If you are familiar with Northern Vermont then you will know that old saying, if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute. Well that’s what today was like, the day starting off with temperatures hovering just above zero. Then the sun came out and quickly warmed the temperatures above 20 degrees.  Finally the clouds quickly rolled in and we had an afternoon burst of snow with about an inch of accumulation. Despite the weather being inconsistent, the snow was consistently great today, and myself and Jeff Silver of Mtn. Seasons Bagels found lots of great snow still untracked in the woods. We also came across lots of trees that look like the ones pictured, which is a testament to all the snow we have received this season. We have gotten 70 inches of snow in February alone and 212″ all season. Another thing to get excited about is that during this whole week, Smugglers’ is offering 1/2 price lift tickets, rentals, and lessons to all Vermont residents (valid I.D. required) so take advantage of being a Vermonter, and enjoy these fantastic conditions. Tomorrow look for cooler temperatures, under mostly cloudy skies, with skiing and riding on 100% of our terrain, on all three mountains!

Powder Day

We received 8 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours, 18 inches in the past 4 days, and 208 inches so far this season.  The new snow was once again just beautiful light powder. I got to ski my favorite trail Madonna Liftline for my first run of the day and it was fantastic.  It is so filled in that the drop at the bottom of the Headwall is gone.  Today was another best day of the year.  We are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails. 34 trails will be groomed for Monday, including Snow Snake, Drifter, and Thomke’s Express for a grand total of 168 acres.  The forecast is calling for 1 to 3 inches of new snow tonight.

USASA Northern Slopestyle Event

The Upper Mountain Fresh Tracks tour this morning was just beautiful. There was a little cloud cover to the east which allowed the soft morning light and color to last a little longer. I enjoyed the snow filled bumps on the skier’s left side of Upper FIS. We also found some nice powder on one of the work roads from FIS to Goat path.  I headed to the Birch Run Terrain Park next for the Slopestyle event. I had a great time watching these skiers and riders showoff their skills. The Park was in great shape and had a nice flow. One of my favorite features is the rainbow rail pictured here.  I think it looks real cool and it seems to ride so smooth.  I want to thank everyone who helped make this wonderful event possible. We are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails and all 8 lifts operating.  33 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Drifter and Snow Snake for a grand total of 168 acres. We received 2 inches of new snow this afternoon and we are expecting another 6 inches tonight.  Tomorrow is going to be a great day with fresh snow and temperatures in the 20’s.

The Practice Slope on Sterling

We received 8 inches of new snow in the past 2 days and 198 inches this season.   This morning started off with some lingering flurries and then the sun came out.  My first run of the day was on Doc Dempsey’s and I really enjoyed the all the fresh snow that was blown in on the skier’s left side. This afternoon I was at the Practice Slope on Sterling to do my runs for the local’s race league. One the great things about the Practice Slope is the T- Bar.  The T- Bar allows you quick access back to the top of the Practice Slope.  People ride the T-Bar for many different reasons. One reason is gate training and racing on the skier’s right side. Another reason is access to two terrain parks the Zone Terrain Park and the Birch Run Terrain Park.  To get to the Birch Run Terrain Park skiers and riders traverse across the Practice Slope and Lower Exhibition.  If you take this traverse please look uphill as you cut across these trails.  Another great reason is to make a few more turns in the glades before heading back to the Upper Parking Lot.  We are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails and all 8 lifts operating. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that we are expecting another 3 to 5 inches of new snow on Saturday night and milder temperatures this weekend.

Great conditions and the FamilyFun Magazine Winter Carnival

We received 6 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours and 11 inches in the past week.  My first run of the day was Upper FIS and the skier’s right side was groomed again last night.  The super light powder on top of the groomed snow was just amazing. My skis were riding on the smooth consistent groomed snow while the fluffy fresh snow floated and flew around my ski boots.  At one point I threw my ski sideways just for fun so the snow would fly over my head. I was taking a run on Snow Snake this afternoon and I ran into Long Island Rick and his wife Elizabeth.  It was nice to see these members of the Smuggs Family out enjoying wonderful conditions.  The icing on the cake was the FamilyFun Magazine Winter Carnival. A great festive event with games, music, outdoor barbecue, a bonfire, ice carving, face painting, and giveaways. We are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails and all 8 lifts operating. The forecast is calling for another 6 inches of new snow by noon tomorrow.  There is even more snow in the forecast for this weekend.  This Saturday, February 21 there will be a slopestyle event in the Birch Run Terrain Park.

Another beautiful day at Smuggs

My first run of the day was on Madonna Mountain. The sun was out and the winds were calm.  There was an inversion this morning; the summit temperature was higher than the base temperature.  The skier’s right side of Upper FIS was groomed last night. This allows skiers and riders the option of moguls or groomed terrain.  It also gives you an out if you get tired while going for it in the bumps.  I was on Morse Mountain midday and stopped by to see Father Winter in his teepee.  Every visit is fun and also educational.  Father Winter’s teepee is located between Lower Morse Liftline and the Magic Learning Trail. Father Winter pictured on the right is at his teepee on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  I headed back to the Upper Mountains later in the afternoon for one more run on Madonna Mountain.  It was so nice out that I decided to ski Upper Drifter and take in some wonderful views.  The photo on the left was taken from one of my favorite vantage points. We are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails and all 8 lifts operating. 33 trails will be groomed tonight, including Smugglers’ Alley, Snow Snake, and skier’s right of Upper FIS.  The forecast is calling for 3 to 6 inches of new snow in the next 24 hours and up to 11 inches by Friday!  There is also more snow in the forecast for this weekend.

Glade skiing

phil sun powder branchToday started off a little cold, but the sun warmed things up. I ran into my good friends Phil and Andy this afternoon. We had a great time playing in the powder filled glades. Phil is pictured here enjoying the great conditions. The wind moved some snow around last night and we found some of the best snow to be in the low angle glades. Tomorrow we plan to be 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails and all 8 lifts operating. Tuesday’s forecast is mostly cloudy skies with some flurries, a high of 15 degrees and light wind. Tonight we plan to groom 31 trails including Smugglers’ Alley, Snake Bite, and Upper Pipeline for a grand total of 158 acres.

The snow just keeps piling up!

DSC06638It has really been a snowy winter so far. We received 62 inches of snow in the past 17 days and 190 inches this season so far. The consistent cold temperatures have allowed the snow to stay light and fluffy. The glade skiing and riding is just amazing right now, but make sure to go with a group of 3 or more. The trees provide protection from the wind for you and the snow. Weather permitting, tomorrow we plan to be 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails open and all 8 lifts operating. 166 acres of freshly groomed terrain for Monday.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hugh powder turnThe snow just keeps piling up here at Smuggs. We received 2 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours, 15 inches in the past week, and 47 inches in the month of February so far. The forecast is calling for another 3 to 4 inches of new snow by Sunday night. I had a great time this morning on the Upper Mountain Fresh Tracks Tour. I met Mike and Joe from Long Island. We all enjoyed making tracks through the drifts on Catwalk and Upper FIS. We also found some beautiful powder on a work road from Upper FIS to Goat Path. I also got to take a few runs with my good friend Ken and his son Justin. We went exploring in the glades trying to find untracked lines. We found some amazing light fluffy powder like you see here in the photo. Weather permitting, tomorrow we plan to be 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails, and all 8 lifts operating. 161 acres of freshly groomed terrain for Sunday.

With a Little Help from the Wind

Matt surfing tthe waveOften times at Smuggs we might only get a few inches of measurable snow but when our prevailing winds do their job it rides much deeper. An example of this is here, where we found a drift tucked between two trails that was probably two feet deep. The sun also came out this afternoon which really made it a much more pleasant day than many had forecasted. Tomorrow look for lots of untracked snow on Madonna with more reasonable temperatures and some light snow falling. Talking about snow, it looks like we have a chance of another 5 inches by Sunday night, which will add to our already impressive snow total of 187”. We will be 100% open and things are shaping up quite nicely for the weekend! Also check out Rails for Ryan tonight in front of the Base Lodge from 6-8 PM benefits go to a great cause and people will be showing off some jibbing skills, the Black Bear tavern in the Base Lodge will be open too.
