John Holcomb having fun on Thomke’s Express.

What a great start to the season. Mother Nature has been giving us some good snowmaking temperatures and 14 inches of new snow in the past 4 days. I had a blast skiing Thomke’s Express and Upper Exhibition this morning. It is wonderful to have trails open with just natural snowfall on opening day.

Harvey’s Hideaway

tom blogToday was another beautiful spring day with sunshine and a high of 53 degrees. Every trail on Sterling is open and in fantastic condition. We have deep base depths and great coverage. There is some great spring skiing and riding to be had out there. This weekend we plan to have both the Madonna I lift and Sterling lift operating. Pictured here is Tom enjoying the soft spring bumps.

Fresh snow

charlie.JPG blogWe received an inch of new snow last night. I was surprised to see how well it bonded with the old snow. I ran into George and Charlie from the Smuggs 55+ Club at the summit of Sterling. These gentlemen could be in the 70+ plus Club. Charlie had already done a warm-up run and was telling us how good the conditions were. George liked what Charlie was saying and suggested Smugglers’ Alley for his warm-up run. The wind had moved the snow around and we found some nice pockets of fresh snow. We skied Poacher’s Woods next and had fun skiing the gladed bumps. Our next run was Hangman’s Drop to Chute and then to Highlander Glades. We were pretty happy about getting fresh tracks on Highlander Glades. I had a great time skiing with Charlie and George. I had to keep reminding myself that the two guys I’m chasing down the mountain are both over 70 years old! Charlie is seen here skiing Highlander Glades.

Upper Exhibition

paul liftlineIt did not take long to get spring conditions this morning. I skied a few groomers this morning and the snow was soft enough to set an edge, but not too soft. The day started pretty cloudy and the sun came out later. The summit stayed hidden in the clouds all day. I skied Upper Exhibition mid day and it had some nice soft bumps. The forecast calls for 1 to 2 inches of new snow on top tonight.

Another beautiful day at Smuggs

mt. mansfield.JPG blogToday started off with cloudy skies and temperatures in the 20s. The clouds disappeared and the sun came out. The temperature made it up to the 40s at the base area. The groomed terrain in the sun turned to corn pretty quickly. The Birch Run Terrain Park was a bunch of fun with the soft conditions. A spine was just added to Birch Run on skiers’ left towards the top.

2nd Annual Pond Skimming

mogul mouse blogToday was all about having fun and celebrating spring. Wild costumes, barbeque grills, and people trying to skim 100 feet across water! The 2nd Annual Pond Skimming was a great time with a jump and a longer pond this year. 100 people attempted to make it across the icy water on alpine skis, snowboards, airboards, cross country skis, a monoboard, ski blades, and even a kayak. Mogul Mouse and Rockin’ Ron the Friendly Pirate went Pond Skimming too. I want to thank our Elvis impersonating Life Guard / Ski Patroller Lee Anderson for wading in the cold water to save those who did not make it across the pond! I also want to thank all the Smuggs employees who made this wonderful event possible.

Getting groovy

groovyThe spring skiing and riding is fantastic. The groomed trails were nice this morning. I did a cruiser on Upper Chilcoot carving some GS turns. I could feel the snow getting softer as I worked my way down the mountain. I ran into Mike McAdoo from Smuggs Terrain Parks a.k.a. Gravity Control and he was inspecting the pond he built. The 2nd Annual Pond Skimming is tomorrow Saturday, April 5. He told me that this year’s pond is even longer than last year’s. The event starts at noon and spectators are welcome.
