Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hugh powder turnThe snow just keeps piling up here at Smuggs. We received 2 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours, 15 inches in the past week, and 47 inches in the month of February so far. The forecast is calling for another 3 to 4 inches of new snow by Sunday night. I had a great time this morning on the Upper Mountain Fresh Tracks Tour. I met Mike and Joe from Long Island. We all enjoyed making tracks through the drifts on Catwalk and Upper FIS. We also found some beautiful powder on a work road from Upper FIS to Goat Path. I also got to take a few runs with my good friend Ken and his son Justin. We went exploring in the glades trying to find untracked lines. We found some amazing light fluffy powder like you see here in the photo. Weather permitting, tomorrow we plan to be 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails, and all 8 lifts operating. 161 acres of freshly groomed terrain for Sunday.

Essex High School Carnival Race

We received another 5 to 7 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours and 32 inches in the past week. The forecast is calling for another 15 inches of new snow by Monday night.   The Upper Mountain Fresh Tracks Tour this morning was just wonderful.  We enjoyed the light powder filled moguls on Upper FIS. Dan’s Ford was also really fun with smaller powder covered bumps.  Lower Chilcoot was groomed early last night and had about 5 inches of super fluffy stuff on top.  Everyone starting making GS turns so that we could get up to speed and float through the champagne powder.  One of the quotes that I can repeat was “Best snow I have ever rode in my life!”  I headed to Lower FIS this afternoon to check out the slalom race.  It was exciting to watch these racers cross blocking the gates to get a faster line.  We are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails and all 8 lifts operating. 168 acres of freshly groomed terrain for Sunday. All 6 Terrain Parks are open and groomed daily.

The Zone Terrain Park

board and snowI started the day with the Cat Trax Express on the Upper Mountain Fresh Tracks tour. The temperature was mild and the wind was light. There was some nice soft morning light on Upper Chilcoot as we skied the fresh corduroy. I stopped many times to take in the wonderful views. Today we opened the Prohibition and Zone Terrain Parks. I had a blast watching the skiers and riders hitting the big jumps. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We have 77 out of 78 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 174 acres of freshly groomed terrain for Sunday. The forecast calls for 2 inches on new snow tonight.

9 inches of snow in the past week and more on the way!

ken deepI started the day off with the Fresh Trax Cat Trax Express. We left the Base Lodge at 7 am this morning and headed up Madonna Mountain. The air was cold and the sky was clear. It was wonderful to watch the sun rise over the presidential range in New Hampshire. After taking in the amazing sights and snapping a few photos it was time to ski and ride. The corduroy on Chilcoot was just fantastic. Later in the day I go to ski with my good friends the Rule Family. We had a great time on Upper FIS, Doc Dempsey’s, Bootlegger, Treasure, and the Birch Run Terrain Park. I think everyone’s favorite part of the day was finding powder stashes in the glades. Pictured here is Ken finding some of that fluffy stuff! We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We have 69 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Tonight we plan to groom 33 trails for a grand total of 165 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for snow and mix to develop in the afternoon and we could see up to 9 inches of new snow by Monday night.

Double grab

double grab.JPG blogI started the day off with the Cat Trax Fresh Trax Tour up Madonna Mountain this morning. It was a little cloudy but we could still see Lake Champlain and the Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. There were a few people on the tour who had never been on top of a mountain before. They were amazed with the beautiful views in every direction. I skied down Chilcoot and enjoyed the fresh corduroy. I went to the Zone after finishing the morning report. There was a group of skiers and riders that were nailing the rails and jumps. Pictured here are two of the skiers and I was lucky enough to capture them getting the grab at the same time.

Northern Vermont USASA Slopestyle Event

skier grab goodblogThis morning I went on the Cat Trax Fresh Trax Tour up Madonna Mountain. It was a beautiful sunny day. We had great views from the cabin of the cat on the ride up the mountain but the 360 degree view from the summit of Madonna was the best. We had a great time cruising down the corduroy of Chilcoot. I went to the Zone Terrain Park to check out the Slopestyle event. There was a great turn out of competitors and the park was in great shape. It was amazing to watch these skiers and riders throwing down their best tricks for the judges. It was also pretty cool to have Vermont’s own Ty Walker show up and help announce the event with Connor Manning.

Great conditions

Justin powder blogWe received 20 inches of new snow in the past 2 days. This morning I was lucky enough to go on the Cat Trax Fresh Trax Tour up Madonna Mountain. I skied Doc Dempsey’s and it was wonderful. I headed down Gary B’s to get back to the Village but when I saw all the powder in Bermuda I had to jump in. I took my time and found many fresh turns. It was another fantastic day on the slopes of Smuggs. Pictured here is my good friend Justin enjoying some powder on the side of Father Bob’s.

Cat Trax Express

P1180906.JPG blogWow what a beautiful morning for the Upper Mountain Fresh Trax with the Cat Trax Express. We arrived at the summit of Madonna and in the east there was a layer of clouds. The sun was above the cloud layer and it was casting sunbeams of warm light. The color and shape of the sunbeams just kept slowly changing. The best part was getting to ski down the mountain with this amazing background.

Cat Trax Express

jan. 18, 2014 cat trax blogSmuggs has a 12 passenger heated cabin snowcat that brings you up Madonna Mountain on Saturday mornings at 7 am. I rode in the Cat Trax Express this morning and it was fantastic. We met in front of the Base Lodge and loaded up the gear. We headed up Lower Madonna liftline to Link and then to Upper Chilcoot. The sky was clear and the moon was up. The light kept changing as we worked our way further up the mountain. Once we got to the summit we all took a few minutes to take in the beautiful views. The moon was still out and the rising sun had Mount Mansfield glowing. All of the sudden I could hear people stepping into their bindings. The skiers took off down Upper Chilcoot to get fresh tracks in the warm morning light. One of the great things about this experience is that it can be shared with people who do not ski or ride. They just simply get back into the heated cabin and ride back down the mountain. We are also doing rides at night to see the fireworks and more. For more information just go to our home page and click on Cat Trax Express. To book your reservation you can call 800-523-2754 or email ski-ride@smuggs.com
