Birch Run Terrain Park

daffyThe blue bird days with corn snow continue! It was 32 degrees this morning on top of Sterling Mountain and it did not take long to warm up. Sterling Mountain is 100 percent open and it skiing great. Smugglers’ Alley was groomed last night and it was nice to carve up some turns on a smooth steep surface. The corn snow also made for some nice soft landings in the Birch Run Terrain Park. This photo shows a good old school daffy off of one of the hits in Birch Run. There are 4 more days of great spring skiing and riding to be had here at Smuggs. Tomorrow’s forecast is mostly sunny skies with temperatures between 47 and 58 degrees. 10 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Smugglers’ Alley, Thomke’s Express, and Black Snake for a grand total of 52 acres.

Spring conditions

matt snow flyingAnother wonderful day to be out on the mountain! The snow turned to corn pretty quickly with the warmer temperatures. Sterling Mountain is 100 percent open with all 31 trails. I love skiing the bumps when they are nice and soft. The corn snow explodes as you hit each bump. It’s like the 4 of July with one explosion after another. Pictured here is Matthew demonstrating the corn snow explosion. The Sterling Lift is operating midweek this week. Weather permitting we plan to operate both Madonna I lift and Sterling this coming closing weekend. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for skies becoming partly sunny with temperatures between 38 and 51 degrees. 7 trails will be groomed for tomorrow including Thomke’s and Practice Slope for a grand total of 42 acres.

1 to 2 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours

timmy powI was driving up the mountain road this morning and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it snowed last night. The closer I got to Smuggs the deeper the snow got. The new snow is pretty dense, so it skied like we got more than a couple inches. The snow was creamy and fun to play in. Pictured here is Timmy playing in the new snow on Chute. It was pretty windy today so it’s a good thing that the new snow is heavy and won’t blow away. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for snow, flurries, and a chance of some mix at the base an inch of accumulation possible with temperatures between 28 and 40 degrees. Our trails have some amazing coverage and I ready for some spring skiing. Sunday’s forecast is calling for a high of 50 degrees with increasing sunshine through out the day. Tomorrow weather permitting we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 5 lifts operating, including the Madonna I Lift. We have 70 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 25 trails will be groomed for that’s 150 acres of freshly groomed terrain. This weekend we have 2015 Backcountry Basecamp. Join the editors of Backcountry Magazine for a resort-based showcase of all things Backcountry. They will be set up by the Smugglers’ Notch Ski and Snowboard Club building.

Birch Run Terrain Park

birchI just love spring skiing and riding. This season has been a little colder than usual. The snow that we received we were able to keep and our snow depths show that. We have fantastic coverage with more snow in the forecast for tonight. We’re expecting a mix of snow and sleet with 3 to 5 inches of accumulation possible. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for a chance of mix early and cloudy skies with temperatures between 30 and 38 degrees. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 70 out of 78 trails open. 31 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including skier’s right on Upper FIS, Smugglers’ Alley, Hangman’s Drop, Upper Pipeline, and Snow Snake for a grand total of 159 acres. Tomorrow in the Village courtyard is the MapleFest Winter Carnival from 3:00 pm till 5:00 pm. Our Maple Celebration features games, sugar on snow, specialty foods, music, and more.

The new snow is sticking very nicely to the old snow. The forecast calls for up to 6 inches of new snow by tomorrow morning. The temperature will get colder tonight and the new snow should dry out. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 78 trails open. 7 lifts will be operating tomorrow, including the Madonna I Lift. 28 trails will be groomed, including Snow Snake, Thomke’s Express, and Drifter for a grand total of 160 acres.

Flying down Upper Chilcoot

patair boundSpring is in the air and so is Pat! Upper Chilcoot has to be my favorite cruiser run. I love how it starts on the back side of Madonna Mountain and works its way back to the front. You get beautiful views of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire from the top. I also like coming through the S turn and then getting the view towards Lake Champlain. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating and 77 out of 78 trails open.
