Moguls on Steriods?
Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Today was a beauty! The sun was out for the duration. Riding up the Village Lift, I had to do a double-take. Where did those moguls on steroids come from, I wondered. They weren’t moguls but snowmaking whales. Despite nearly 2 feet of snow in the past week, our snowmakers are still busy making the white gold. Speaking of moguls, Mogul Mouse’s BFF Billy Bob Bear has been working out at the gym. So, I want to deny the rumors that Billy Bob is on bear-roids.
No other Mother like Madonna
Cruising to the upper mountains on the Midway trail, I stopped to get what I think is an “artsy” shot of Madonna Mountain as viewed looking over a pile of snow near one of the snowmaking reservoirs (known in the summer as Rumrunners’ Hideaway). On the ride up the Madonna I Lift, I marveled at Patrol and others negotiating Upper Liftline.

I enjoyed a sunshine-guided run on Drifter and sailed on more snowmaking whales – this time on Lower FIS. My last run of the day I took in all 2,610 feet of Smuggs vertical: Upper Chilcoot > Link > Waterfall > Ruthie’s > Midway > Curley’s > Meadowlark. At 3 miles long, I believe this is the longest run on the mountain. Can anyone other than Hugh or Steve Wry confirm that? If you can – respond to this blog post in the comment section below.
I want to thank our groomers for doing a great job on the trails last night, especially the steeper trails. Upper FIS, Chute, Upper Pipeline, and Smugglers’ Alley were all groomed last night. Today’s weather was a pretty crazy with a little bit of everything from snow, sleet, freezing rain, rain, and some cloudy skies.
I ran into my good friend Lenny today. It was fun to do a few runs and catch up on the lift rides. Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating and 36 trails open.
The Madonna I lift and Sterling Lift will be operating for closing day. We have 44 trails open with terrain for experts and intermediates. The conditions are just fantastic with great coverage and corn snow everywhere. I took advantage of the Madonna I lift operating today and made Upper FIS my first run. Pictured here is Greg Fatigate tearing up Upper FIS. Greg is a Snow Sport University Snowboard Instructor, Snow Sport University Training Manager, and Smuggs Park Groomer. Tomorrow’s forecast is mostly sunny skies with temperatures between 41 and 52 degrees. I’m really looking forward to one of the best closing days that I can remember.
We received 3 to 4 inches of new snow last night and 18 inches in the past 6 days. My first run of the day was Upper FIS and skier’s right was groomed last night. I like having the moguls on skier’s left and the groomed terrain on skier’s right. The new snow was lighter on top of the mountain and the wind moved it around a little. I had fun looking for different drifts to play in. Pictured on the left is Ski Patrol Director Dave Sills on Upper FIS. This afternoon I headed down to Sir Henry’s Learning and Fun Park to catch the Cookie Race. In the photo on the right snowboarder Emma makes it across a funbox as Snow Sport University Instructor Allison celebrates in the background. It’s always so much fun watching the young skiers and riders showing off their new learned skills. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 5 lifts operating including the Madonna I Lift. We have 70 out of 78 trails open with terrain open for all ability levels.
I just love spring skiing and riding. This season has been a little colder than usual. The snow that we received we were able to keep and our snow depths show that. We have fantastic coverage with more snow in the forecast for tonight. We’re expecting a mix of snow and sleet with 3 to 5 inches of accumulation possible. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for a chance of mix early and cloudy skies with temperatures between 30 and 38 degrees. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 70 out of 78 trails open. 31 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including skier’s right on Upper FIS, Smugglers’ Alley, Hangman’s Drop, Upper Pipeline, and Snow Snake for a grand total of 159 acres. Tomorrow in the Village courtyard is the MapleFest Winter Carnival from 3:00 pm till 5:00 pm. Our Maple Celebration features games, sugar on snow, specialty foods, music, and more.
We received 2 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours and 13 inches in the past 3 days. Skier’s right on Upper FIS was groomed last night. I decided to make it my first run of the day. The new snow on top of the groomed snow was wonderful. You have the nice smooth surface underneath the new snow. Upper FIS was groomed full width below the Doc’s cutoff. I let my skis run a little and started making some GS turns. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 5 lifts operating, including the Madonna I Lift. We have 71 out of 78 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. We have 5 Terrain Parks open. The forecast for the next 24 hours is snow with 2 to 3 inches of accumulation possible and temperatures between 26 and 39 degrees. Pictured here is Oliver Blackman from Snow Sport University. He’s a great instructor, great guy, and one of the smoothest skiers I know!
It was snowing very hard this morning on the lift ride up to the summit of Sterling for the Easter sunrise service. There was a great turn out even though the weather felt like winter. The clouds started breaking up during the service giving us some nice beams of light. It was a beautiful service followed by powder turns. The new snow made first run so peaceful and quiet. I took my time working my way down the mountain enjoying every turn. I can’t believe that we are still skiing powder and it’s Easter. We received 11 inches of new snow in the past 2 days and we’re expecting up to 5 more inches of new snow by Tuesday night. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 5 lifts operating, including the Madonna I lift. We have 71 out of 78 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. We have 5 terrain parks open. 32 trails will be groomed for tomorrow including skier’s right on Upper FIS, Smugglers’ Alley, Thomke’s Express, and Snow Snake for a grand total of 173 acres. Tomorrow’s forecast is periods of light snow 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible with temperatures between 27 and 37 degrees.
We received 8 to 10 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. My first run of the day was Upper FIS and it is really good. The new snow started off pretty wet and dried out as the temperatures dropped. The wet snow stuck to everything which is great. The new snow should insulate the older snow and they should bond well. It was a little cool today for pond skimming, but we still had a great turn out. There were some amazing costumes and crashes! Check out the costumes the Ski Patrollers/Lifeguards were wearing in the photo on the left. The Tailgate Party was so much fun with its festive vibe and live music from Right Coast Leftovers. Everyone had a fantastic time and the sun came out for a little while too. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 5 lifts operating, including the Madonna I Lift. We have 73 out of 78 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. We have 5 Terrain Parks open.
Today was just gorgeous with the blue bird skies and milder temperatures. It was so pretty out today that I had to take a few runs just for the scenic views. I like the photo on the left because Madonna Mountain and Upper Drifter look different from this angle. Our Terrain Park Crew was in the Zone today getting ready for the Pond Skimming on Saturday, April 4th. It was neat to watch as the groomer cut a little deeper with each pass through the pond. The pond is really taking shape. I am really looking forward to skimmin’ n chillin’ n grillin’ this weekend! We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 5 lifts operating, including the Madonna I Lift. We have 73 out of 78 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Tomorrow’s forecast is partly to mostly cloudy with a chance of flurries or a light shower early with temperatures between 37 and 45 degrees, which will make for some great spring conditions. 33 trails will be groomed tonight including skier’s right on Upper FIS, Smugglers’ Alley, Wanderer, and Hangman’s Drop for a grand total of 168 acres.
We received 4 inches of new snow last night and that brings us to 250 inches so far this season. The colder temperatures we had last night made the new snow nice and light. The wind was able to move the new snow around a little and I found some nice drifts to play in because of it. We have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 73 out of 78 trails open. We will have 5 lifts operating tomorrow including the Madonna I lift. 31 trails will be groomed tonight, including Smugglers’ Alley, skier’s right on Upper FIS, and Snow Snake for a grand total of 170 acres. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for mostly sunny skies with temperatures between 15 and 28 degrees. I can’t wait to go looking for powder stashes tomorrow. Rabbit Rabbit
