Madonna II Lift reopens tomorrow

The base area of the Madonna II Lift

This morning at 5 am I called our snowmaking crew to get a weather update and to find out where we are making snow for the snow report. I spoke with long-time snowmaker Dave Gagnon and he told me they had a great night! He said the single-digit temperatures and no wind allowed them to “Kill it on Lower Chilcoot.” Our grooming staff will now take over and push out all the snowmaking whales. We plan to have the Madonna II Lift operating tomorrow with Link to Lower Chilcoot open. The Madonna II Lift will remain open the rest of this week and weekend. Today we have the Sterling Lift, Village Lift, Mogul Mouse’s Magic Lift, Morse Highlands Lift, and Sir Henry’s Glider all operating. We have 18 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 16 out of the 18 trails have been groomed for today, including Dixie’s Knoll for a grand total of 72 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Surface conditions are machine-groomed and variable with average base depths of 6 to 24 inches. Currently, it is sunny and 16 degrees at the summit of Sterling with winds of 0 to 5 mph. Today’s forecast is calling for sunny skies early with increasing clouds later in the day, a high of 24 degrees at the base and 18 degrees at the summit of Sterling.

This weekend the featured beer for the apres sports parties at Bootlegger’s and the Black Bear Tavern is Fiddlehead.

Spring Fever

People wearing fun outfits, smiles, goggle tans, warm temperatures, sunshine, and spring conditions! I started the day off with a few cruisers on Chilcoot, Link, Lower Madonna Liftline, Drifter, Shuttle, and Treasure. I headed for soft bumps next on Doc Dempsey’s and Upper FIS. I even spotted the leprechaun on Morse Mountain.

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including Morse Highlands and Madonna I. We have 60 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 22 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Chilcoot, Rumrunner, Treasure Run, Garden Path, Log Jam, and Lower Morse Liftline for a grand total of 92 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Surface conditions are spring conditions and machine groomed with average base depths of 14 to 48 inches. Birch Run Terrain Park is open with 3 jumps and 6 rails. Currently, it is sunny and 51 degrees at the summit of Sterling with winds of 10 to 15 mph. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for a slight chance of light rain early then skies becoming mostly sunny with a high of 52 degrees at the base and 44 degrees at higher elevations. Temperatures do not go below freezing tonight, so expect more spring conditions tomorrow.

Lifts and Trails

Today we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including the Madonna I lift. We have 75 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Freefall is open from the traverse on Upper FIS. 33 trails have been groomed for today, including McPherson’s, Hibernator, and Black Snake for a grand total of 131 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Lower Hangman’s was groomed last night from Upper Exhibition down to Treasure Run. Surface conditions are packed powder and powder with average base depths of 24 to 54 inches.

Weather

We have a temperature inversion this morning. It is warmer at the top than it is at the bottom. Currently it is 10 degrees at the summit of Sterling with beautiful sunny skies and winds of 0 to 5 mph. Today’s forecast is calling for mostly sunny skies with temperatures between 14 and 24 degrees. The sun will work its magic and the temperature should rise quickly.

Snowmaking

Last night we made snow on Link to Sterling, Lower FIS, and skier’s right of Lower Madonna Liftline. Snowmaking continues on Lower FIS today, so it will be closed for the day along with Norwegian Woods.
