We received 31 inches of new snow in the past 6 days and the conditions are fantastic. Tomorrow we plan to have 5 lifts operating. The Village Lift and Mogul Mouse Magic Lift will be operating to the top. Sterling Lift, Madonna I Lift, and Sir Henry’s Wonder Carpet will also be operating. The Madonna I Lift will have a delayed opening, but we plan to open at 9:30 am. We are presently making snow on Lower Chilcoot and the top of Link from the top of the Madonna II Lift down to Lower Chilcoot. Earlier this season we made some snow on Upper Chilcoot at the S turn. The rest of the trails that are open on Madonna will be natural snow coverage and there are some spots with thin cover.
Snowmaking on Lower Chilcoot
Snowcats have been on Upper Chilcoot and Drifter to pack down the snow. They also spread out the snowdrifts to give the trails the best coverage. Madonna will be experts only this weekend. We plan to have Upper Chilcoot, Link, Upper Drifter, Lower Drifter, McPherson’s, Playground, Lower Madonna Liftline, and Lower FIS open on Madonna Mountain this weekend. Sterling Mountain is 100 percent open. We plan to have Garden Path, Sam’s Run, Lower Morse Liftline, Magic Learning Trail, Sir Henry’s Learning Hill, Wanderer, Midway, and Meadowlark open on Morse Mountain this weekend. Now that Midway and Meadowlark are open you can ski or ride to and from the upper mountains back to the village.
Slalom gates on Black Snake
Tomorrow we plan to have 5 lifts operating with 46 trails open. 16 out of the 46 trails will be groomed for tomorrow that’s 72 acres of freshly groomed terrain. The Birch Run Terrain Park is open with 7 features.

We received 2 to 3 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours and 11 inches in the past 3 days. The forecast is calling for another 3 to 6 inches of new snow in the next 24 hours. Our snowmakers have been very busy and they are doing a great job. They are presently making snow on Link, Lower Madonna Liftline, and from the S turn down on Upper Chilcoot, so that we can get the Madonna 1 Chairlift operating this weekend. They are also making snow on Black Snake and Practice Slope. We plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with over 40 trails open this weekend. The ski photo is a preview of this week’s No Bull Video Snow Report. The video will be posted midday tomorrow at www.facebook.com/SmugglersNotch/
12 trails have been groomed today, that’s 31 acres. We received 2 inches of new snow overnight and 19 inches in the past week. The forecast is calling for another 6 inches of new snow by Thursday night. This weekend we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains. We are presently making snow on Link, Lower Madonna Liftline, Black Snake, and the Practice Slope. We have 3 lifts operating with 31 trails open today.
I had a great time today on Madonna and Sterling Mountain. I was out with Alex Martin from Smuggs TV filming another episode of the No Bull Video Snow Report. We went to the summit of Madonna Mountain to take in all the wonderful views. We then took a cruiser run on Upper Chilcoot to Link for our first run. Link was pretty nice with soft conditions. I would have to say that my trail pick of the day was Snake Bite. I love the steep pitch and the snow was very edgeable.
The forecast is calling for colder temperatures tonight and we plan to resume snowmaking on Madonna Mountain. We plan to make snow on Link, Lower Madonna Liftline, and Lower FIS. We plan to groom 36 trails tonight for a grand total of 165 acres. Tomorrow’s forecast is partly to mostly sunny skies with temperatures between 12 and 25 degrees. The forecast is also calling for snow showers Saturday night and Tuesday.
Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Shake it up and FIZZ is not a recipe for a cocktail but how Fletch states his trail pick. That’s ironic because Fletch is the bartender in the Black Bear Tavern at the Base Lodge. The trail he’s referring to is Upper F.I.S. aka Fizz, which is intoxicating in its own way. After cruising down the upper part of Upper F.I.S., I tend to turn onto lower Doc Dempsey’s aka Doc’s, but Fletch said let’s stay on Fizz. So I cancelled my Doctor’s appointment, and we shook it up and fizzed some more. By the time we reached Link, I felt like a drunken sailor but without the rum. Pictured on top of the snow-covered Madonna Mountain prior to fizzing, are the aforementioned Fletch, and Hokie one of our Shuttle Drivers.
Elsewhere around the Resort, I saw the Hogans and the Coadys – families from Canada who vacation here together. In an interesting twist, the kids are skiers and the dads are snowboarders. Skyler, one of the young boys, had a chance to become a boarder but decided against it because he would have to wait until he was good enough to go on some of his favorite trails like Smugglers’ Alley. In fact, Skyler told me his goal this week was to ski Upper F.I.S. for the first time. To quote Fletch “Shake it up and FIZZ!”
