A visit with Father Winter and more

Father Winter

Today I did a 3 mountain tour. I started with Sterling, then headed to Madonna, and finished my day down on Morse. The conditions are just fantastic right now. I found some wonderful snow in the glades of all 3 mountains. I got to take a run with my son Hugh B after school this afternoon. We had a blast playing in the fresh snow that we found in the trees. Hugh B asked if we could stop by and see Father Winter on our way back to my office because it is Wednesday. Father Winter is at his teepee on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It’s is always fun and educational when you visit Father Winter.

Upper Drifter

I was skiing down Upper Drifter today and I just had to stop.  I was in a tuck trying to keep my speed up for the small uphill section of Upper Drifter when I noticed some big drifts. I was surprised how big they were and I had to get a picture. The ski poles in the photo of the drifts are 50 inches tall.  When I was riding the Madonna I lift today I also noticed that the bottom of the Headwall is now filled in and there is no drop. We received 4 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours and 31 inches in the past week. There is also more snow in the forecast with up to 11 more inches by Thursday night.

Where are my skis?

I went to the Nordic Center today for the Smugglers’ Notch Snowshoe Festival. I watched the 16th Annual Northern Vermont Snowshoe Race. There was an 8 km race and a 4 km fun run. I was glad the race was early in the day before the snow started falling. The snow was coming down so hard this afternoon that it reduced visibility. I went to my office midday to upload the photos from the Nordic Center. I headed back out to take a few more runs and my skis were already covered in snow. The tracks that I made skiing to my office were also gone. I picked up my son Hugh B after his Mitey Mites lesson and we went in search of fresh snow, which was not hard to find.

Nice snow in the woods

The wind was blowing pretty good, so we decided to head into the woods. We skied a line that I skied this morning and I could not find my tracks. We received 3 inches of new snow this afternoon and it is still snowing very hard. We could see up to 9 more inches of snow in the next 24 hours. Tomorrow’s forecast is snow early then flurries later with temperatures between 13 and 26 degrees. We plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including the Madonna I lift. We are 96 percent open with 76 out of 78 trails open with terrain for all ability levels.

Tomorrow is going to be really good, so if I was you, I would call into work, tell them that you have a problem with your eyes and you can’t see coming to work!

Snowmaking and more

Upper Chilcoot

We received 3 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours and 24 inches of snow in the past week. I had a great time today playing in the glades on Madonna and Sterling Mountain. I also enjoyed taking a few cruiser runs on Chilcoot and Black Snake. Tomorow’s forecast is snow in the morning with a chance of mix and sleet later in the day with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible, temperatures between 17 and 24 degrees. We are presently making snow on Lower FIS, McPherson’s, and the bottom of Upper FIS. We are making snow on Lower FIS for this weekend’s USASA Boarder/Skier Cross. This is an exciting head to head race with banked turns, gates, and jumps.
