If you build it, they will come

Nick is feeling the Springtime vibe!

Spring skiing and riding yesterday followed by a powder day today! We received 4 inches of new snow overnight and 11 inches in the past 5 days. I had a blast playing in the drifts where the wind had moved the new snow on trails like Drifter. I also found some great turns in the trees where the snow was more like a fluffy blanket, like in the Alley woods and Poacher’s Woods. I was also lucky enough to get fresh tracks on Full Nelson. The calendar says spring, but I am not going to turn down another powder day before the season is over!

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 4 lifts operating, including the Madonna I Lift. Madonna and Sterling are 100 percent open. We have 72 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Surface conditions are packed powder and machine groomed with average base depths of 12 to 54 inches. We plan to groom 32 trails tonight, including Upper FIS, Drifter, Snow Snake, Howie’s Wanderer, Smugglers’ Alley, and Thomke’s for a grand total of 130 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Currently, it is partly sunny and 17 degrees at the summit of Sterling with winds of 15 to 25 mph. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for partly sunny skies early with snow in the afternoon 1 to 3 inches of accumulation possible on top, a high of 38 degrees at the base, and 30 degrees at higher elevations.

The Nordic Center is open with 17 km of cross-country trails and 15 km of snowshoeing trails.

Time to get FLAKEY!

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. With COVID-19, there are some new procedures on the mountain like the ghost lines at the lift corrals and only riding up with the people in your arrival party. But… there are more things that are the same. There’s seeing familiar faces of friends and co-workers like Larry, Dara & Darrell (OK, Darrell is there for comedic effect). There’s a sense of joyful anticipation in Parking Lot 1. And even if it’s not another beautiful day, there’s the unmatched thrill of skiing or riding down the mountain! You know the saying “the worst day of skiing is better than the best day in the office.” It’s time to get FLAKEY!

This snowman says “with snow and snowmaking in the near future, it’s time to get FLAKEY!”

Smuggs Family Members

The Long family next to the trail map in Parking Lot #1

The Long family was just here at Smuggs for the holidays. They drove back to Pennsylvania and they were not even home for a week before coming back! They said that they saw all the snow and could not stay away!

Smuggs Family Members

I would like to introduce the East family from Oklahoma. This is their first vacation to Smuggs and they are having a wonderful time! I want to wish Isabel the happiest of birthdays because today she turns 12 years old. The East family told me how they found a sticker that says “Ski The East.” I think they should get a sticker and then cut it to say “The East Ski.”

I have to share a quick funny story. I rode the shuttle bus to Parking Lot #1 early today. As I was getting off the bus the driver Bob pointed out the East family to me and he told me that this was their first time at the upper mountains. Bob wanted to make sure the East family knew where they were going. I headed over to the East family and introduced myself. We had a great conversation talking about Smuggs. We talked about all the things that it has to offer not just in the winter, but summer also. I told the East family that I hope they enjoy the rest of their vacation and then skied away. I turned around to get my skis and they were not there. I first thought maybe someone took them, but then I realized that when I got off the bus to talk to the East family that I left my skis on the shuttle bus. I waited for Bob to come back to Parking Lot #1 with my skis. When he got there we had a good laugh about me leaving my skis! We said that my skis did a run without me!
