Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

It is always good to ski with a friend

You know that it is going to be a great day when it snows for three days and then the sun comes out! Photographer Dennis Curran was here today to capture images for Smuggs to use in our advertisements. It definitely was the perfect day with tons of snow and a beautiful blue bird day. I had a great time jumping into piles of powder and skiing in the trees. Photo shoots always take more time than you would think, but when you see the photos later it is worth it!  We are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating and all 78 trails open. Tonight we plan to groom 34 trails, including Lower FIS, Thomke’s Express, and Curley’s Cutback for a grand total of 126 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tomorrow’s forecast is mostly sunny skies early becoming partly sunny in the afternoon with temperatures between 19 and 30 degrees.

Village Lift

Matt McCawley for Hugh. Spectacular start to the day! Sun is shining and the weather is sweet with light winds and great visibility. 95 percent of our open terrain was groomed last night, so finish your complete breakfast and get up here to enjoy the carvable corduroy. For most of the Vermont schools this is one of the last days of winter vacation, don’t waste it, go skiing or snowboarding! Remember to dress in layers too, as temps will be on the rise throughout the day.

Bluebird / Blackbird

Bluebird Day. Midway in the foreground, Practice Slope in the middle, and Mansfield in the distance.

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Twas a Bluebird Day! With the sunshine and warmer temps it felt like summer up here (OK, I put a little bull in the No Bull). However, it was more seasonable than yesterday. My trail pick of the day was Lower FIS, while Steve Wry of Mtn Ops picked Upper FIS. To warm-up after a few runs I stopped in the Black Bear for a hot chocolate and I ran into my friends Jack, Cary, and Rich (I think Jack’s trail pick was Long Trail). Locals and Resort Guests were enjoying Jammin’ Sam’s apres acoustic music. Sam knows I like The Beatles, so he played “Blackbird” and “Here Comes the Sun”. It was not a bad day at the office.

Good Morning y Buenos Días

MM Lift 2

Tatiana, Eric, Luz, Dave, Cesar, and Rebecca are ready to greet you.

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Good Day Sunshine! Temps should scoot above 20 degrees today. Rob Bob Stu from Patrol told me that the Groomers totally rocked it on Upper and Lower Rumrunner, so that’s this morning’s trail pick. I stopped by Mogul Mouse’s Magic Lift to see Dave and the crew. They told me to say HI to everyone on the Blog.

2.27.2016 Backcountry Base CampHugh B and I checked out the 2016 Backcountry Basecamp today at the yurt in parking lot 1.  They will be here tomorrow, Sunday February 28th as well.  Come join the editors of Backcountry Magazine for a resort-based showcase of all things backcountry. For nearly 20 years Backcountry Magazine has been the leading source for the backcountry movement and now they are bringing that expertise to a one-on-one setting through their Backcountry Basecamp Tour at Smugglers’ Notch. Weekend activities feature alpine touring, avalanche training, demos, trade displays, and on mountain course treks. This event is free and on a first-come first-served basis. For more information go to backcountrymagazine.com

2.27.2016 top of Full NelsonAfter visiting the Backcountry Basecamp we skied two of my favorite trails on Sterling Mountain.  Full Nelson and Upper Exhibition.  Skiing with Hugh B is a lot like skiing with his Dad.  He loves to jump off of everything that he can.

Harvest the corn

harley carveThe spring skiing and riding is just fantastic. This morning started off with a little bit of rain, but that did not last long. The sun came out this afternoon with temperatures reaching into the 5o’s at the summit of Sterling. I really enjoyed the soft corn snow on top of the smooth groomed snow. I also had a great time on the ungroomed snow of Upper Exhibition and Bootlegger. Pictured here is my wife Harley enjoying the spring conditions on Black Snake. This closing weekend we plan to have to have the Madonna I lift and Sterling lift operating with 43 trails open. 12 trails will be groomed for tomorrow for a grand total of 75 acres. Tomorrow’s forecast is increasing clouds with a chance of showers midday and later with temperatures between 39 and 51 degrees. The forecast for closing day Sunday, April 19th is mostly sunny skies with temperatures between 41 and 52 degrees.

The Headwall on Madonna Mountain

headwall jumpSpring is definitely in the air! Today was a great day to be on the mountain with beautiful sunny skies and temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s. The snow turned to corn and it was game on. The Ski Patrol opened Madonna Liftline top to bottom and left it open until 4 pm. It was skiing great with the spring conditions! I also had a fantastic time on Upper FIS, Doc Dempsey’s, and Upper Morse Liftline. Tomorrow we plan to have the Sterling Lift operating with intermediate and expert terrain open. 12 trails will be groomed for tomorrow including Thomke’s Express and Jolly Rodger for a grand total of 66 acres. Weather permitting we plan to have both Madonna I Lift and Sterling Lift operating next weekend.
