Camps, Groups, Privates

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Camps, Groups, Privates. No, not military designations, but the different kinds of lessons taught by Snow Sport University (aka SSU). Martha and “Princess” Pam have taught them all – from 3 year olds to 93 year olds – and every age and ability in between. Pam is a past recipient of the Spirit of the Mountain Award, and, they’ve both been Summer Hiking Guides for the Activities Department! We’re glad that you two are Smugglers!

SNOW REPORT INFO: For Wednesday, we plan to have Madonna I open, as well as 5 other lifts. 33 trails will be open and 31 trails/130 acres will be groomed. Tomorrow’s forecast is partly sunny skies with a high of 38 degrees.

Lifts and Lessons

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. There are a lot of folks who make a mountain go. Let’s take a moment to recognize the Lifties and Instructors… HUZZAH! Without them we wouldn’t be skiing and riding all the great terrain here at Smuggs. Speaking of terrain we have 57 trails open. 29 of them will be groomed for tomorrow – that’s 121 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Let that be a Lesson and Lift your spirits.

Fantastic conditions

Snow Sport University Instructor Matt McCawley playing in some fresh snow

I had a wonderful time today! We received 32 inches of snow in the past week and everything is in great shape. The groomers have a nice deep base and the glades have filled in. I took a run with Matt McCawley and his group today. We skied Upper Chilcoot, Catwalk, Doc Dempsey’s, Ruthie’s, Gary B’s, and Bermuda. Of course, Matt had a few tricks up his sleeve and we were able to find a few powder stashes also. It’s always fun to ski with Matt!

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including the Madonna 1 lift. We plan to have 77 out of 78 trails open tomorrow with terrain for all ability levels. Surface conditions are packed powder and powder with average base depths of 16 to 54 inches. We plan to groom 35 trails tonight, including Waterfall, Snow Snake, and Snake Bite for a grand total of 132 acres of freshly groomed terrain. We also plan to groom some natural snow trails like the bottom of Black Bear, Shuttle, Evaporator, and Jolly Rodger. Currently, it is partly cloudy and 22 degrees at the summit of Sterling. Tonight’s forecast is calling for 1 to 2 inches of snow. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for snow another 3 to 5 inches of accumulation possible and a high of 30 degrees.

Morse Code

King Billy BEFORE

Larry’s class entering King Billy Bear’s den…

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. I got to tool around Morse Mountain today. I saw Larry and Dara (but not their other brother Darrell) teaching Discovery Camp skiers (ages 3-5, aka Disco Kids) on the Magic Learning Trail and Sir Henry’s. Morse is a great area for beginners and it also features trails for intermediates. I ran into Snowmaking Maestro Justin Thoelke during lunch at Green Mountain Deli. He said snowmaking’s next move was going to be Sam’s Run and Dixie’s Knoll and that’ll open more trails on Morse! Maybe then Darrell will come out and take some runs.
