Ski lesson on Garden Path

Midway with Sterling Mountain in the background

It was great to have Midway and Meadowlark open today. My office is in the Village and I really enjoy being able to ski or ride to the upper mountains. I love how the views of Madonna and Sterling change along the way. We received 2 inches of new snow and 15 inches in the past 4 days. Currently, it is still snowing and 14 degrees at the summit of Sterling. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for cloudy skies, and snow showers with half an inch of accumulation possible and a high of 22 degrees in the Village and 19 degrees at higher elevations. Today we made snow on Sam’s Run and Dixie’s Knoll. Our snowmakers plan to move to Lower Chilcoot tonight. We have terrain for all ability levels with 30 trails open. 15 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Smugglers’ Alley for a grand total of 70 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tomorrow we plan to have the Sterling Lift and Sir Henry’s Glider operating. We also plan to have the Village Lift and Mogul Mouse’s Magic Lift open to the top. Surface conditions are machine groomed and packed powder with average base depths of 6 to 36 inches.

Reindeer Visit

At the basketball courts in the Village from 12:30 pm till 3:30 pm today

Come meet Dasher & Cupid from the Vermont Reindeer Farm, before they trek to the North Pole to help Santa! The Vermont Reindeer Farm will be bringing Cupid and Dasher to Smuggs. The reindeer live on the Broe Family Farm in West Charleston, Vermont. They built the farm on Broe land that has been in the family for 5 generations! Pauline Broe says, the best part is seeing people’s faces when they realize that reindeer are real. To youngsters, she explains, “These are Santa’s reindeer. It’s our job to take care of the reindeer for Santa. We call ourselves the reindeer-keepers.” Among the information they share is that reindeer are a distinct subspecies of caribou and that both males and females have antlers, which they lose and regrow on an annual cycle.

A winch cat is a special cat equipped with a huge winch with a braided steel cable and a steel boom that pays out the cable from the cat’s cabin. Typically, the free end of a winch cat’s cable is anchored to a shackle on a steel pole, concrete block, or some combination of the two at the top of the slope before it begins its descent of an impossibly steep mountain grade. This allows us to groom steeper slopes that regular snow cats can not do.

Due to grooming operations, lift operations will begin today at 10:00 am. Today we have Sterling Lift and Sir Henry’s Glider. We also have Village Lift and Mogul Mouse’s Magic Lift open to mid-station. We have terrain open for all ability levels with 22 trails open. 12 trails have been groomed for today for a grand total of 51 acres of freshly groomed terrain. We received 10 inches of new snow overnight on top. Currently, it is partly sunny and 2 degrees at the summit of Sterling with winds of 10 to 20 mph. Today’s forecast is calling for partly sunny skies with a high of 8 degrees and breezy. Dress warm and enjoy the new snow! Surface conditions are machine groomed and powder with average base depths of 6 to 30 inches. We are presently making snow on Midway, Garden Path, and Meadowlark.
