Know your snow

Snow on my mitten
Close up

When we think of snow, a six-star figure comes to mind, but that is not always the case. Many do, but there are also quite a few odd-looking crystals falling from the winter clouds.

From Ken Libbrecht’s Field Guide to Snowflakes

They say that there is no exact number of types of snowflakes, but the chart above shows 35 different types of the most common. The snowflakes I took photos of today are hard to describe. They have a column shape with small caps but do not seem to be solid. That is why it’s hard to say just how many different types of snowflakes there are.

As I was looking at the cool-shaped snowflakes on my mitten it made me think of Wilson Alwyn Bentley, also known as Snowflake Bentley. He was an American meteorologist and photographer, who was the first known person to take detailed photographs of snowflakes and record their features. Snowflake Bentley was from Jericho, Vermont.
