US AirBag Demo and Tour

Airbag blogI had a great time today in the Zone Terrain Park watching skiers and riders flying through the air. The jump was pretty big at 14 feet tall and 45 degree take off. The air bag allowed people to try new tricks with out worrying about the landing. The weather was wonderful with bright sunshine. Speaking of wonderful, the conditions are just fantastic. We have powder and packed powder on top of a deep base. We are 100 percent open with all 78 trails open.

Double grab

double grab.JPG blogI started the day off with the Cat Trax Fresh Trax Tour up Madonna Mountain this morning. It was a little cloudy but we could still see Lake Champlain and the Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. There were a few people on the tour who had never been on top of a mountain before. They were amazed with the beautiful views in every direction. I skied down Chilcoot and enjoyed the fresh corduroy. I went to the Zone after finishing the morning report. There was a group of skiers and riders that were nailing the rails and jumps. Pictured here are two of the skiers and I was lucky enough to capture them getting the grab at the same time.

Get in the Zone

zone.JPG blogToday was absolutely beautiful with the sunshine and milder temperatures. Today we had the local races on Practice Slope. I went to the top of Sterling with my race board to take a warm up run before racing. I had a great time carving up the corduroy on Black Snake. We had two races today because we had to cancel one race due to 18 inches of snow in 24 hours that we received on Valentine’s Day. I went to the Zone Terrain Park after I finished my race runs. It was fun to watch the skier pictured here floating through the air, while making his tricks look smooth and easy.

Northern Vermont USASA Slopestyle Event

skier grab goodblogThis morning I went on the Cat Trax Fresh Trax Tour up Madonna Mountain. It was a beautiful sunny day. We had great views from the cabin of the cat on the ride up the mountain but the 360 degree view from the summit of Madonna was the best. We had a great time cruising down the corduroy of Chilcoot. I went to the Zone Terrain Park to check out the Slopestyle event. There was a great turn out of competitors and the park was in great shape. It was amazing to watch these skiers and riders throwing down their best tricks for the judges. It was also pretty cool to have Vermont’s own Ty Walker show up and help announce the event with Connor Manning.

Get in the Zone

Ozone blogI was riding the Sterling T-Bar this morning and I was checking out the new features in the Zone Terrain Park. The Smuggs Park Crew just installed five rails. I was watching the skiers and riders testing out the rails and jumps. There are four sets of jumps in the Zone with each set having two jumps. One jump is larger than the other, giving the skier/rider a choice of size. There was snowboarder who was only hitting the jumps. He had a smooth style and was nailing his tricks. I waited for him at the top of the T Bar and then chatted with him. He was recently in Utah and he was watching the progress of the Zone Terrain Park online from there. He was stoked to finally be here hitting the jumps. I was stoked to watch him and take photos. This picture here is my favorite because of his body position and he has the grab.

Race training on the Practice Slope

st. mikeThe Practice Slope was pretty busy today. There was a High School Winter Carnival GS race on Black Snake, Snake Bite, and Practice Slope. These brave racers were working hard to get around the gates on the steep pitch of Snake Bite. Snake Bite can be intimidating, especially when there are gates. The Carnival continues tomorrow with a slalom race on Lower FIS. I headed to the Zone after the GS race. There are 8 jumps in the Zone Terrain Park. I had fun watching the skiers and riders flying through the air. The far skier’s left side of Practice Slope had a race course. Saint Michael’s Race Team was here at Smuggs running slalom gates. The photo seen here is one of the racers hitting one of the slalom gates.
