We plan to run the Madonna I and Sterling lifts this weekend

Nice bumps on Full Nelson

Today started off pretty foggy, but the snow was good. The fog lifted by the afternoon and we even saw some partly sunny skies for a little while. The temperature almost reached 40 degrees at the summit of Sterling today, so we had some great spring conditions.  The soft spring conditions made it fun to attack the steeper trails like Upper Pipeline, Chute, Smugglers’ Alley, Full Nelson, Snake Bite, and Bootlegger.

We have some snow on the way this weekend. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for periods of snow and sleet 1 to 3 inches of accumulation possible with temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees. There is more snow in the forecast for Saturday night into Sunday with another 3 inches of accumulation possible.

Slalom Race

race 3The Saint Michael’s College Winter Carnival was yesterday and today. Today’s race is a slalom race being held on Black Snake, Snake Bite, and Practice Slope. There are 12 colleges racing in the Carnival with some of the best NCAA alpine racers in the east. The races have been so much fun to watch. The caliber of these racers is just amazing! The second run of the slalom race is starting soon. The Sterling T-Bar is open and is the easiest way to get to the race to be a spectator.

Saint Michael’s College Winter Carnival

race 5It was pretty amazing to watch some of the best NCAA alpine ski racers in the east taking on Black Snake, Snake Bite, and Practice Slope. Today’s race was giant slalom and it began at the pine tree start near the top of Harvey’s Hideaway.  The racers built up speed on Black Snake before diving onto the steep pitch of Snake Bite. They would try to hold on as their skis loaded up as they rounded the gates. The skis would then spring them across the slope or in the air as the skis released the built up energy.  It all depended on their body position. They would try to carry as much speed off of Snake Bite to propel them down the lower angled Practice Slope. race 3These racers were not holding anything back. It was very exciting to watch and I am looking forward to tomorrow’s slalom race!

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We have 56 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 31 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, that’s 131 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Log Jam, Zone, and Birch Run Terrain Parks are all open.

High School Race

race 7The Smugglers’ Notch Ski and Snowboard Club is hosting a High School Race Series this season. Today’s race tested the skills of these athletes on Snake Bite and Practice Slope. They started half way up Snake Bite and then continued onto Practice Slope. It does not take long to get up to speed on Snake Bite. The hard part is nailing the gates on the steep pitch so that you can carry speed down onto the lower pitch of Practice Slope. It was fun to watch and the best part is listening to everyone cheer each other on!

Race training

race 2It was fun to watch the Smugglers’ Notch Ski Club training today on Black Snake, Snake Bite, and the Practice Slope. We have 40 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 18 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, that’s a grand total of 87 acres of freshly groomed terrain.
