Fun on Sterling

Armand finds some nice snow to play in on Treasure Run

I had a good time at Zone Terrain Park and Practice Slope this morning.  The Sterling T-Bar was running today and the kids were just making laps.  The T-Bar makes it easy to do another run in the course or work on a new trick in the terrain park. Many skiers and riders use the T-Bar to access Birch Run Terrain park also, but always watch for traffic when crossing other trails.  I had a great time this afternoon catching up with good friends Armand, Lidia, and Tony.  Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 7 lifts operating.  We have 44 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Lower FIS will be closed tomorrow for construction of the Flowground Terrain Park.

34 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Upper FIS, Smugglers’ Alley, and Snow Snake for a grand total of 134 acres of freshly groomed terrain.  Birch Run, Log Jam, and Zone Terrain Park are all open. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for light snow an inch of accumulation possible with a chance of mix precipitation and temperatures between 28 and 37 degrees.

The conditions were fantastic this morning and by this afternoon they were amazing. The snow started about 11 am and it intensified throughout the afternoon. Every run was better than the last. I did not want to stop skiing. The conditions tomorrow will be even better with the 2 to 4 inches of accumulation that are predicted for tonight. Tomorrow’s forecast is light snow with another 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible with a high of 0 degrees. We could see a storm total of up to 11 inches of new snow by Saturday. Bundle up and enjoy all the fresh snow. Our snowmakers have been busy covering the bottom half of Birch Run Terrain Park and the Zone Terrain Park. They will move to Madonna Mountain tonight.

I went skiing this morning on Morse Mountain. I headed up the Village Lift and worked my way over to the Morse Highlands area. This area is a favorite for beginners and it even has some glades. The kids in the Snow Sport University classes were having a blast on the little trails through the woods. I skied on Sterling in the afternoon and then took a quick trip up into the Notch to check out some of the ice flows. One of my favorite ice flows is at the Carwash Falls, which is not very far up into the Notch. It is called Carwash because the falls can reach the road at times. Ice climbers use this ice flow for training because is it not really tall and has pretty easy access.

Great conditions and snowmaking

It was a little a cold today, but the snow is just so good. I found that the snow in the trees was the best today. It also keeps you warmer because you have to make a bunch of turns and you are not moving as fast. The coverage for this time of the year is amazing. Our snowmakers took advantage of the colder temperatures. They produced some huge snowmaking whales on Lower FIS, Lower Madonna Liftline, Link to Sterling, and Mulcahy’s Link.  Our groomers will flatten the snowmakine whales tonight on Lower Madonna Liftline, Mulcahy’s Link, and Link to Sterling. 26 trails will be groomed tonight for a grand total of 117 acres of freshly groomed terrain.

The conditions are just fantastic! All the natural snow that we have been receiving is staying nice and fluffy due to consistent cold temperatures. The colder temperatures are also allowing our snowmakers to keep the snowguns running around the clock. We are presently making snow on Lower FIS, Mulcahy’s Link, and Lower Madonna Liftline.  Lower FIS is presently closed and we plan to open it soon. Mulcahy’s Link and Lower Madonna Liftline are open with snowmaking in progress. 25 out of the 66 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Upper Chilcoot, Curley’s Cutback, and Black Snake for a grand total of 111 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Birch Run Terrain Park is open with 7 features. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for partly sunny skies with a high of 2 degrees. Wear an extra layer and enjoy those great conditions!

Happy Holidays

We received another 2 inches of new snow last night and 27 inches in the past week. The conditions are just fantastic especially at higher elevations. Upper FIS is open from Catwalk down to the cut off to Lower Doc’s and the skier’s left side is skiing and riding very well. All of the double black diamond trails and triple black diamond trail are open! The conditions are only going to get better with the 5 to 11 inches that could fall in the next 24 hours. Snowmaking continues around the clock on Mulcahy’s Link, Lower FIS, and Lower Madonna Liftline. 26 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, that’s 105 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Great conditions

We received 31 inches of new snow in the past 6 days and the conditions are fantastic. Tomorrow we plan to have 5 lifts operating. The Village Lift and Mogul Mouse Magic Lift will be operating to the top. Sterling Lift, Madonna I Lift, and Sir Henry’s Wonder Carpet will also be operating. The Madonna I Lift will have a delayed opening, but we plan to open at 9:30 am. We are presently making snow on Lower Chilcoot and the top of Link from the top of the Madonna II Lift down to Lower Chilcoot. Earlier this season we made some snow on Upper Chilcoot at the S turn. The rest of the trails that are open on Madonna will be natural snow coverage and there are some spots with thin cover.

Snowmaking on Lower Chilcoot

Snowcats have been on Upper Chilcoot and Drifter to pack down the snow. They also spread out the snowdrifts to give the trails the best coverage. Madonna will be experts only this weekend. We plan to have Upper Chilcoot, Link, Upper Drifter, Lower Drifter, McPherson’s, Playground, Lower Madonna Liftline, and Lower FIS open on Madonna Mountain this weekend. Sterling Mountain is 100 percent open. We plan to have Garden Path, Sam’s Run, Lower Morse Liftline, Magic Learning Trail, Sir Henry’s Learning Hill, Wanderer, Midway, and Meadowlark open on Morse Mountain this weekend. Now that Midway and Meadowlark are open you can ski or ride to and from the upper mountains back to the village.

4 more days left of the 2016 – 2017 Winter Season

Upper Pipeline

We had a little rain earlier today and it was dry for the rest of the day. The temperature fell slowly throughout the day. At 2:00 pm it was 42 degrees at the summit of Sterling, so the snow was still spring conditions. The snow was pretty grabby yesterday but today’s cooler temperatures made the snow a little faster. The bumps on Upper FIS, Upper Pipeline, Snake Bite, and Full Nelson were fun to ski today. I also enjoyed the smooth soft groomed terrain of Lower FIS, Black Snake, and Lower Rumrunner.

Tomorrow we plan to have the Madonna I lift and Sterling lift operating with 35 trails open for intermediates and experts. 16 trails will be groomed for tomorrow that is 62 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tomorrow’s forecast is a chance of flurries early then skies becoming partly sunny with temperatures between 34 and 46 degrees. Friday’s forecast is mostly sunny skies with temperatures between 36 and 48 degrees.
