Artists in the Mountains

Take some time out from the Summer sun to dabble in the arts. Specially designed, hands-on workshops help you create your own art and craft projects to enjoy for years to come. Local artists provide instruction and all the materials needed to complete your project.

Create with an Outdoor Artist
Monday, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm & 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Tuesdays, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm & 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
$50 per person, per session


Grab a bag of supplies and pick your spot. Annette will spend ten minutes showing you how to use the materials and will safely circulate and provide instruction as you create a piece of Vermont art. Your choices include pencils, charcoal, ink, or watercolor. Or experiment and combine media! Please bring a hat and drinking water. Please sign up at least two hours before class start time. $50 per person, per session. Pre-registration required as space is limited. All ages welcome, under age ten must be accompanied by an adult. All materials & handouts included.

Stencil a memory. You'll stencil a design on a glass ornament using glass etching cream. Ages 10 & older. All materials included.

Sketching Outdoors
Learn how strokes are made on canvas and how your brushes do the work with acrylic paint. All while you sip your favorite drink. All levels. Materials included. 21 & older only. Alcoholic beverages are not provided.

Join Karen Winslow in this unique outdoor landscape painting class that exercises the heart, mind, and spirit. We will be producing small plein air studies from nature using a combination of watercolor and gouache (opaque watercolor), or a combination of paint and colored pencils, on toned paper. Karen teaches through multiple demonstrations, and one-on-one instruction, how to use artistic principles to interpret a scene and capture it in paint. In case of rain, the class will be indoors. The Painted Rock Movement - You can bring a stone to class or choose one of ours and you'll paint whatever you want on them. It could include dates, kind words, initials, something about Smuggs and more. The object is to go out and drop your stone in places that you travel. If someone picks up the stone they should travel with it and place it in a new location of their choice. Ages 8 & up, under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

This class will teach you how to make a cake in a mug using a microwave and cake mix...along with fondant roses and more to top it! Take your sMUGgs Cake mug home to enjoy easy cake making! All ages. Under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Capture the beautiful summer sunset in this outdoor painting/drawing class, with Karen Winslow. We will be using watercolor and gouache, or a combination of paint and colored pencils on toned paper. Students will learn how to interpret and simplify a scene by painting in masses (value shapes) to create a realistic illusion of light, form, and space. All materials included. All levels welcome. Join Karen Winslow in this fun new class that brings the outdoors, in! Using the same principles that she teaches in her outdoor landscape painting classes, Karen will demonstrate how to invent unique landscape paintings and teach you how to create a believable illusion of light, form, and space. Subjects could include sunsets, moonscapes, vistas, farms, or covered bridges, etc. In addition to all art supplies, tea and cookies will be provided, so come explore your creativi-TEA and Par-TEA on!! Explore various media as we sketch and draw inside the Artists in the Mountains room at the Morse Highlands Day Lodge. We will use pencil, charcoal, inks and more. No experience or particular skills necessary. Ages 10 & older. All materials included. Includes an artist quality sketchbook and pencil to take home.

In this workshop you'll spend a half-hour indoors learning the basics of how the paints work, then we'll head outdoors. Please bring a water bottle and a bag or backpack (if you have them). We will stay within a quarter mile of the art building, but wear walking shoes. Ages 12 & older. All materials as well as a painting stool are provided.

Acrylic painting for anyone who has considered painting but didn't think they could, or for artists who wish to increase their creativity. Primary colors are explored, along with composition and play. Each person will be pleased to bring home a painting at the end of this 2 1/2-hour session. Ages 12 & older.

Explore your creative side as you develop natural forms into clay images in the three-dimensional art form. Nancy Schade leads you in clay modeling, learning the properties of various clays and forming clay into a piece that can be finished. Take home a complete sculpture. Ages 12 & older.
