Spring conditions

We experienced many types of weather today with sleet, freezing rain, rain, windy conditions, and even partly sunny skies. I had a blast today on Snow Snake. It was groomed last night and was skiing great! The trail was nice and flat with soft creamy snow on top. Snow Snake has steeper pitches, multiple turns, and neat contours, which made it more challenging than some of the other Morse Mountain trails. This also makes it more fun. It was one of my favorites as a kid and I still love it today! Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including Madonna I and Morse Highlands. We have 34 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 31 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Smugglers’ Alley, Upper FIS, and Snow Snake for a grand total of 126 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Surface conditions are machine groomed and spring conditions with average base depths of 6 to 40 inches. Currently, it is cloudy and 29 degrees at the summit of Sterling with winds of 20 to 30 mph. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for a chance of rain at the base, rain and snow at higher elevations. A high of 45 degrees at the base and 37 degrees at higher elevations for tomorrow with lighter winds than today.

Camps, Groups, Privates

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Camps, Groups, Privates. No, not military designations, but the different kinds of lessons taught by Snow Sport University (aka SSU). Martha and “Princess” Pam have taught them all – from 3 year olds to 93 year olds – and every age and ability in between. Pam is a past recipient of the Spirit of the Mountain Award, and, they’ve both been Summer Hiking Guides for the Activities Department! We’re glad that you two are Smugglers!

New snow and partly sunny skies

We received 1 to 2 inches of new snow last night on top. I skied Thomke’s this morning and was able to find some fresh snow. The wind blew the new snow around a bit, but there were some nice pockets. The sun came out and warmed things up giving us some spring conditions at lower elevations in the afternoon. Tomorrow we plan to have skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including Madonna II and Morse Highlands. The Madonna I Lift will be closed tomorrow to allow us more time to groom Upper FIS. We plan to have the Madonna I Lift open again on Wednesday. We will have 32 trails open tomorrow with terrain for all ability levels. 28 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Log Jam, McPherson’s, Playground, Lower Chilcoot, Smugglers’ Alley, Snake Bite, and Garden Path for a grand total of 115 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Surface conditions are machine groomed and variable with average base depths of 6 to 40 inches. Currently, it is partly sunny and 27 degrees at the summit of Sterling with winds of 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for partly sunny skies with a high of 38 degrees at the base and 24 degrees at higher elevations.
