Racing into the weekend

Today was the Harvey Wesson Memorial Race Series on the Practice Slope. Today’s course was a paneled slalom. I thought I had short enough skis for the tighter turns, but I was not able to make clean carves as I wanted. I still had a great time and I enjoyed watching the racers take on the panel slalom. There is more racing this weekend. Our Free Family Fun Race is tomorrow on Lower Madonna Liftline. On Sunday it is the Vertical Challenge Race on Lower Madonna Liftline. We have many events this weekend. For more information just go to our events page.

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We have 49 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Surface conditions are machine groomed and packed powder with average base depths of 14 to 50 inches. 28 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Smugglers’ Alley, Hibernator, and Playground for a grand total of 125 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Currently, it is partly cloudy and 27 degrees at the summit of Sterling. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for a slight chance of freezing rain early then sleet and snow later with a high of 32 degrees. There is snow in the forecast for Saturday night with 1 to 3 inches of accumulation possible.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAToday was another beautiful day with partly sunny skies and mild temperatures.  I had a wonderful time on all 3 mountains today. I took a few cruiser runs on Morse and checked out the Morse Highlands area. I skied Madonna with my son Hugh B this morning. We skied Upper FIS to the traverse which brings you to Freefall.  Freefall skied well with nice edgeable snow and good coverage.  I headed over to Sterling later in the afternoon to get my race runs in. I thought that I did pretty good until I watched a few of the club kids run the course.  I also had fun watching the Saint Michael’s Race Team slalom gate training on the Practice Slope this afternoon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating.  We have all 78 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 34 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Waterfall, Black Snake, and Curley’s Cutback for a grand total of 138 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for mostly cloudy skies with a high of 30 degrees.

Harvey Wesson Local Race Series

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe skiing and riding is just so good right now. I had a blast on Smugglers’ Alley this morning. It was not groomed last night and the new snow had been pushed into piles. I say piles instead of moguls because, they were just soft snow that I could go right through. I played in the woods some today too and found some nice untracked turns. We received 3 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours and 12 inches in the past 2 days. We are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating and all 78 trails open.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERARobin’s Run is open from the work road down to Freefall. 40 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Ruthie’s, Smugglers’ Alley, and Garden Path for a grand total of 152 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tomorrow’s forecast is flurries and periods of snow with another 2 inches of accumulation possible with temperatures between 22 and 33 degrees. We could see up to 7 more inches of new snow by Sunday night.
