Connie with her class on Wanderer

I would like you to meet Connie Douthwaite. Connie is a member of the Snow Sport University here at Smugglers’ Notch. She is a ski instructor who works with 3 to 6 year old children. The neat thing is that 13 years ago Connie was a 6 year old child taking ski lessons here at Smugglers’ Notch. Connie told me that her instructor back then was Larry Arnold who still works here at Smugglers’ Notch as a ski instructor. It is wonderful to see someone who learned to ski here 13 years ago is now teaching the next generation!

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We now have 36 trails open with terrain for  all ability levels. Tonight we plan to resume snowmaking on Upper Rumrunner, Crossover, Treasure Run, Lower Exhibition, and the Practice Slope. All 36 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, that’s 145 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for light snow and sleet a dusting of accumulation with a chance of mix later in the day and temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees. Tomorrow we plan to have the Log Jam, Birch Run, and Zone Terrain Park all open.

Steve Wry out on the mountain today enjoying his retirement

I ran into Steve Wry today in the Upper Parking Lot.  Steve recently retired from Smuggs where he was the Vice President of the Guest Skiing Experience. We had a great time taking a few runs and catching up on the lift rides.  We skied Upper Rumrunner, Black Snake, Practice Slope, Upper Chilcoot, Upper FIS, and Smugglers’ Alley. I want to thank our snowmakers for their hard work last night on Midway, Dixie’s Knoll, Meadowlark, Garden Path, and Lower Morse Liftline. I also want to thank our groomers for their hard work to get all these trails ready to ski and ride today. Tonight we plan to groom 35 trails including Upper FIS, Smugglers’ Alley, and Snow Snake for a grand total of 135 acres of freshly groomed terrain. The 24 hour forecast is calling for flurries and snow showers with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible with a high of 34 degrees. Marge and in charge!

Marge

Marge livin’ LARGE on Treasure Run

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. I got my first runs of the season today! Is it like getting back on a bike after 6 months… yes, but you don’t have to pedal as hard. No, what I mean is that I found my ski legs fairly quickly. As I got off the Sterling Lift, I saw my friend and the former Director of Activities, Marge McIntosh. I convinced her to let me take her picture for the Blog. Despite the gray, late afternoon, late November light, I managed to get an action shot.

Of course I did the “Bread and Butter” trails of Upper Rumrunner, Crossover, Treasure Run, Lower Exhibition.  I also ventured down a bumpy Black Snake (marked for Advanced Skiers) to Pipeline, to the Treasure cut-over, and slid over to Practice Slope with a little stream skimming, to Parking Lot 1.

Trails lead to fun

All trails lead to FUN

All in all, some first run FUN!

Trail count doubles

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hangman’ s

We received 7 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours and 13 inches in the past 2 days. It snowed all day long! I would have to say that some of the nicest snow of the day was on Hangman’s. The low angle sections at the top and just below Upper Exhibition were filled in very well.  Ski Patrol was busy today opening more terrain; in fact we doubled our trail count from 7 to 14. To open a trail it takes more than just dropping the ropes, obstacles have to be marked, closed trails off the open trail must be roped off, and because Upper Exhibition was opened today lift tower pads had to be installed. I want to thank our patrollers for their hard work which allowed us to ski and ride Chute, Hangman’s, Upper Exhibition from Upper Rumrunner down to tower 11, Bootlegger from the work road on Thomke’s, Jolly Rodger from Upper Exhibition, Harvey’s Hideaway from Upper Exhibition, and Black Snake down to the hairpin.

The conditions were just amazing today! I also want to thank our snowmakers who are presently busy covering Lower Rumrunner and the Practice Slope. They plan to resume snowmaking on Birch Run tonight. Tonight’s forecast is calling for some great snowmaking temperatures of 6 to 18 degrees. Our snowmakers are prepared to take full advantage of this window of colder temperatures. Tomorrow the forecast is calling for partly to mostly sunny skies and temperatures to rise throughout the day. Tomorrow we plan to have the Sterling Lift operating with 13 trails open for intermediates and experts. Sir Henry’s Learning Hill will be groomed and open tomorrow without the Wonder Carpet operating.
