Rime ice on a tree branch. Soft rime formations have the appearance of white ice needles and scales; they are fragile and can be easily shaken off objects. Factors that favour soft rime are small drop size, slow accretion of liquid water, high degree of supercooling, and fast dissipation of latent heat of fusion. The opposite conditions favour ice with higher densities, such as hard rime or clear ice

Smiles for miles

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnother amazing day here at Smuggs! It has been one of the most snow filled Novembers I can remember. The 4 inches of new snow that we received last night were smaller flakes, which made the snow surface denser. The denser snow skied like it was deeper than it was because it allowed you to float with less snow. I had two fantastic powder runs early this morning with my good friend Matt McCawley ( see the photos in post below).  I then got to ski with my good friends Geoff and Tony. Today was special because Tony turned 50 years young.  A great way to celebrate, making powder with your good friends!  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis afternoon I took a couple runs with the Snow Sport University Supervisors. They were having fun training in the wonderful snow.

Rockin’ Ron Carter for Hugh. This has got to be one of the best Novembers on record, at least as far as snow goes… 66 inches of total accumulation and counting! More snow is in the forecast as well. I was talking to Mike McAdoo of Mtn Ops and he said today’s wet and heavy snow will definitely help out the base.  All the trails on Sterling Mountain are open today. We anticipate Madonna I running this coming weekend. Grab your skis and boards and hit the POW NOW!
