Snowmaking and natural snowfall

We received 3 inches of new snow today and 10 inches in the past 3 days! The conditions just keep getting better. Upper Madonna Liftline was open today from the top down to the Robin’s Run work road. I was going to ski Catwalk down to Shuttle, but when Madonna Liftline is open I have to ski it. I am so glad that I did! I found some great pockets of fresh snow to play in. Once I was on the work road I skied it all the way to Goat Path. The work road holds the snow really well because it is protected from the wind and the snow lays down like a nice blanket. I also played in the woods today and found some sweet untracked turns. I was pretty quiet here today so there are many stashes left to find tomorrow.

We plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including the Madonna I lift. We now have 46 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Surface conditions are packed powder and powder with average base depths of 12 to 48 inches. 24 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Smugglers’ Alley and Sam’s Run for a grand total of 96 acres of freshly groomed terrain. We also plan to groom Upper FIS from the bottom of Freefall down to “Times Square” Mulcahy’s Link. We are making snow around the clock on Black Snake, Snake Bite, and the Practice Slope. Currently, it is snowing and 22 degrees at the summit of Sterling. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for mostly sunny skies with a high of 25 degrees.

The Usual Suspects

Dale & Darcy
Dale & Darcy – longtime and frequent skiers. They are also talented musicians.

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Despite the date on the calendar, conditions are GREAT! Therefore, many of the usual suspects were on the slopes. It’s always fun to hang out with Darcy & Dale and talk tunes and trails. At the Rumrunner-Black Snake intersection we conferred with Blinky and Dr. John, and their suggestion was Harvey’s to Full Nelson, and good advice it was.

LIFTS & TRAILS

This Saturday and Sunday both Madonna I and Sterling will be operating with 50+ trails open for intermediates and experts. Expect spring conditions. We will be closed Monday, April 15th – Friday, April 19th and then RE-OPEN next weekend. On Saturday, April 20th we plan to operate both Madonna I and Sterling. On Sunday, April 21st, only the Sterling Lift will be running (loading for the Easter Sunrise Service is from 6:00 am – 6:30 am).

Spring Fever

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Matt enjoying the spring conditions

It didn’t take long for things to soften this morning. I had a blast on the steeper groomed runs like Bootlegger, Smugglers’ Alley, Chute, Hangman’s Drop, and Upper Pipeline. In fact all the groomed runs were good. The natural snow was also good on Black Bear, Full Nelson, Harvey’s Hideaway, and Upper Exhibition. I want to thank the Sterling Patrol for a wonderful lunch today, it was unexpected and appreciated.

Freshly groomed terrain

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThere were 5 groomers on Morse Mountain this morning when I arrived at work. It was fun to watch as yesterday’s tracks were turned into today’s beautiful corduroy. The groomers work together as if harvesting wheat. They stagger behind one another to make sure all the snow gets groomed. Thank you to our groomers for another job well done!
