Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

It is always good to ski with a friend

You know that it is going to be a great day when it snows for three days and then the sun comes out! Photographer Dennis Curran was here today to capture images for Smuggs to use in our advertisements. It definitely was the perfect day with tons of snow and a beautiful blue bird day. I had a great time jumping into piles of powder and skiing in the trees. Photo shoots always take more time than you would think, but when you see the photos later it is worth it!  We are 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating and all 78 trails open. Tonight we plan to groom 34 trails, including Lower FIS, Thomke’s Express, and Curley’s Cutback for a grand total of 126 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tomorrow’s forecast is mostly sunny skies early becoming partly sunny in the afternoon with temperatures between 19 and 30 degrees.

It just keeps getting better!

Matt riding the wave

I can not believe that we received another foot of snow last night after receiving 40 inches of snow since Tuesday morning. The snow we received last night was nice and fluffy. The wind moved some of it around last night, but the snow in the trees stayed put. My first run of the day was with Snow Sport University Instructor Oliver Blackman. We skied Upper FIS and the skier’s left-hand side was just fantastic! Most storms that roll through Smuggs load up the skier’s left-hand side of Upper FIS and today was no exception. I ran into Snow Sport University Instructors Matt McCawley and Mike Brainard in the afternoon along with Smuggs Employee Lenny. We had a great time on Black Snake, Harvey’s Hideaway, Full Nelson, and Half Nelson.

I love the combo of Harvey’s to Full Nelson. If you do this run always be aware of people coming down Jolly Rodger as you come off of Harvey’s and head up to Full Nelson. I found some great snow on the skier’s right-hand side of Full Nelson, especially at the bottom. We all headed to Madonna for our next run and hit up the Headwall.

It skied fantastic with tons of snow, especially on the sections where there is less of a pitch and the wind does not get to it. We jumped into the bottom half of Red Fox Glades after finishing the Headwall. I was pleasantly surprised with all the snow that was in the trees. It was all

so good that we headed back up Madonna and this time we went for Freefall. Freefall is not open from the top, but you can get to it from the traverse on Upper FIS. We cut into the Black Hole and I was floating through the trees in powder up to my waist! It’s hard to beat good times with great friends.

10 to 12 inches of new snow so far!

Harvey’s Hideaway

Today was pretty amazing with the snowfall rate increasing throughout the day. We had about 3 to 4 inches of accumulation by midday. It really started to snow hard later in the afternoon and now it’s pretty much white conditions. We have now received 10 to 12 inches of new snow by 4:30 this afternoon. The snowplows are having a tough time keeping up with the snowfall and the roads are snow covered. I would have to say that it is easily falling at a rate of an inch an hour and it is suppose to snow even harder tonight. We could see another 10 to 14 inches of accumulation in the next 24 hours. The snowfall total could be up to 27 inches by Thursday night. The conditions just got better all day long.

Chute

The new snow was getting blown around and it is filling in all the low spots. The snow in the trees was not as wind blown and should be quite amazing tomorrow. Our groomers will be out tonight packing down all the new snow and mixing it in with the old snow to make some beautiful groomer runs tomorrow.  The corduroy will be under a good bit of new snow especially on the upper mountains because they get groomed first. We plan to open more terrain with all the new snow that we have been receiving. Tomorrow we plan to be 100 percent open with top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains and 6 lifts operating, including the Madonna I Lift and all 78 trails open.

The bottom half of Harvey’s Hideaway

29 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, that’s 116 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Snow surfaces will be powder and packed powder conditions. Tomorrow’s forecast is snow most of the day with another 3 to 5 inches of accumulation possible and temperatures between 12 and 25 degrees. It is time to grab your powder skis or powder board and head to Smuggs tomorrow for some amazing skiing and riding!
