Beware of smugglers

I had a blast today, skiing as a pirate. We were doing a little filming for the Friendly Pirate’s new song “Sea Shanty.” The song is about skiing at Smuggs. Someone in the Sterling corral even mistook me for the Friendly Pirate. Rockin’ Ron is a snow reporter on Tuesdays to cover my day off. It was fun to switch and have the snow reporter become a pirate! Tomorrow, we plan to have top-to-bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 5 lifts operating, including the Madonna I Lift. We have 57 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 26 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Waterfall, Midway, and Smugglers’ Alley, for a total of 104 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Surface conditions are machine groomed and variable, with average base depths of 14 to 40 inches. Currently, it is foggy and 32 degrees at the summit of Sterling, with winds of 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for a wintry mix early, becoming snow with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible on top, with a high of 32 degrees at the base and 30 degrees at higher elevations.

This weekend’s apres sport party is with Woodchuck Cider.

World Famous Cookie Race

The Cookie Race is a classic here at Smuggs! It is a great way for the kids to show their families how much they have learned in their ski and snowboard lessons through the week. There are multiple courses for the different skill levels. Rockin’ Ron the Friendly Pirate is there to introduce the racers to the crowd. King Billy Bob Bear and Mogul Mouse are also there to cheer on the skiers and riders. The best part is that everyone gets a cookie! The Cookie Race is only one of today’s events, because we also have the torchlight parade, winter carnival, and fireworks.

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We have 76 out of 78 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Surface conditions are machine groomed and packed powder with average base depths of 16 to 54 inches. 30 trails will be groomed tonight, including Upper FIS, Snow Snake, and Thomke’s for a grand total of 120 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Tonight we plan to make snow on Smugglers’ Alley, Bootlegger, Thomke’s Express, and the Zone Terrain Park. Currently it is partly sunny and 2 degrees at the summit of Sterling. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for mostly sunny skies with a high of 24 degrees.

World Famous Cookie Race

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOne of the great things about the Cookie Race is that it lets the kids show what they have learned while studying at Snow Sport University. They can show off their turning skills to the cheering crowd as they race down the course. These brave racers are rewarded with a cookie at the finish line!

I would like to you meet Long Island Rick. Rick and his family come to Smuggs every year. Rick follows Hugh’s Views a.k.a. Hugh’s Blog and photo of the day and makes wonderful comments on different posts. His comments are always positive and fun to read. I am going to share one of Rick’s posts to show you his love for winter, skiing, and all things Smuggs!

Rick said “So…I’m sitting at my daughter’s dance class and I hear a lovely lady say something about our weather on Long Island…”Well, it’s supposed to rain today and ALL of tomorrow. I’ll take rain and warm over snow and cold though.”
(DIRTY LOOK) Dramatic Pause…
Inside my head I said….”WHAT!!!! Are you kidding!” Who plays outside in winter rain? YUK! True lovers of winter love to play in the SNOW!” Right? And race on Thursday for cookies and RING COWBELLS and sometimes dress in crazy outfits like tutus on Tuesdays and visit the “Winters” in a teepee and Sing with a Friendly Pirate whenever they see him and hang out with Snow Reporter!
So…
I told her about Smuggs!

Cowbell is packed!
Cheers!”
