The Great Groomer Race!

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. As you can see, our Groomers are preparing the slopes for your skiing and riding pleasure – 127.71 acres to be precise. They’re not actually racing (that wouldn’t be safe), they’re grooming in tandem. We plan to have 67 trails open today, accessed by 6 Lifts including Madonna I and Morse Highlands. The forecast is morning snow showers, cloudy skies, afternoon snow, and a high of 38 degrees. Sounds like you should race to the slopes to get some runs!

What a day!

We received 7 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours, 19 inches in the past 2 days, and 199 inches this season so far! It was the perfect storm with wet heavy snow to start, that stuck to everything. The temperature dropped as the snow piled up. The colder temperatures produced some beautiful fluffy powder to finish off the storm. This new snow allowed us to open 35 trails in the past 2 days. I want to thank our patrollers for all their hard work to open all those trails! Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including Madonna I and Morse Highlands. We now have 68 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. 35 trails will be groomed for tomorrow for a grand total of 138 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Surface conditions are powder and packed powder with average base depths of 16 to 54 inches. Currently, it is partly sunny and 11 degrees at the summit of Sterling with winds of 15 to 20 mph. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for cloudy skies with a chance of a snow shower early and a high of 42 degrees at the base and 29 degrees at higher elevations. I’m looking forward to playing in all this wonderful snow again tomorrow!

Daily Recommended Serving

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Our groomers will be busy overnight, preparing 34 trails/132 acres for tomorrow – including Upper FIS, Smugglers’ Alley, and Log Jam. We plan to have 6 lifts operating including Madonna I and Morse Highlands. This should help you get your daily on-hill experience.

What constitutes a full day of skiing/riding? My friend RoML says 3 runs is his daily recommended serving. I’ve also heard 4 runs. What is your definition of a day on the slopes?

RoML bringing out the blue. His daily recommended serving for a day of skiing is 3 runs.

Partly sunny to dumping in no time

It went from spring back to winter today. The thermometer hit 50 degrees at the base earlier today. The temperature fell throughout the day. The temperature at the base is now 21 degrees. We had partly sunny skies most of the day. It clouded up quickly after 3 pm and that’s when it started to snow. We could see an inch of accumulation by tomorrow morning. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for mostly sunny skies with a high of 15 degrees at the base and 9 degrees at higher elevations. Friday’s forecast is periods of snow with up to 11 inches of accumulation possible. If you were out on the slopes today make sure to get all your gear dry for tomorrow. Damp gloves or boots will not be much fun tomorrow. Our grooming staff will be busy tonight getting the slopes looking their best for tomorrow. They will concentrate their efforts on Sterling, Morse, and trails accessed from the Madonna II Lift. The Madonna I Lift will be closed tomorrow and we plan to reopen it on Friday. We need extra time to groom Upper FIS and Upper Chilcoot. Tomorrow we plan to have 6 lifts operating; Village, Sterling, Mogul Mouse’s Magic, Morse Highlands, Sir Henry’s Glider, and Madonna II. The Village Lift and Mogul Mouse’s Magic Lift will open at 8:30 am tomorrow and Friday morning. We have 29 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. More trails will be open this weekend. All 29 trails will be groomed for tomorrow for a grand total of 120 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Surface conditions are machine groomed and loose granular with average base depths of 12 to 46 inches.

Snowmaking resumes tonight on Garden Path, Midway, Meadowlark, and Lower Morse Liftline.

Uphill Travel: All 3 mountains are close to uphill traffic due to snowmaking and grooming operations.

Happy B’day/Bro-hemian Rhapsody

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Marie Luneau celebrated her 12th Birthday skiing with Grandad Dan and Dad Scott. Dan started skiing here in 1962 with the St. Albans Rotary Program. Her Uncle Paul is the Director of Village Services at the Resort. Then I chanced upon Noah Hall (longtime Smuggler and first-year Groomer) and Kyle Paya. They have been friends since 3rd Grade – the year I started to mentor Noah. We skied the groomed terrain of Upper FIS (aka Fizz) and Smugglers’ Alley (aka Alley). When you’re warping down those trails in those conditions it feels like a combination of skiing/floating/flying! While getting on the Madonna I Lift I spotted Steve Goodkind – a Smuggs fashion icon for many years. It was photo op time for the Best or Worst Dressed on the mountain.

Snow Report Info:

LIFTS – possible delayed starts on Wednesday morning, especially on the Upper Mountains. On Thursday and Friday, the Village and Mogul Mouse Lifts will each have a delayed start of 8:30 am, due to grooming and snowmaking.

SNOWMAKING – Wednesday and Thursday night on Morse Mountain.

GROOMING – no grooming tonight, it will commence on Wednesday morning.

UPHILL TRAFFIC – Morse Mountain closed on Wednesday and Thursday nights, All mountains closed on Thursday morning and night, Sterling Mountain reopens for Uphill on Friday morning. Got all that? There’ll be a quiz later.
