What a day!

Summit of Sterling with sunny skies
Trail pick of the day
Getting my groove back

It was 39 degrees and sunny on top of Sterling first thing this morning. I knew that it would not take long before we had some spring conditions. I started my day off snowboarding on Morse Mountain. I broke out my old carving board and had a blast on Garden Path. The soft snow makes it easy to carve. I then switched to skis and headed for the upper mountains. The snow was getting soft on the upper mountains also. Ski Patrol dropped ropes on Hangmans’ Drop, Thomke’s Express, Shire, Bermuda, Father Bob’s, Gary B’s, and Upper Pipeline. The Madonna I lift was on wind hold most of the day, but it opened this afternoon. I could not wait to ski Upper FIS. It was groomed last night and then set in the sun until the Madonna I Lift opened. It was smooth, covered with soft snow, and just plain wonderful. I hurried to the bottom, got back on the Madonna I Lift and skied it again!

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including the Madonna I lift. We have 70 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Surface conditions are spring and machine groomed with average base depths of 16 to 56 inches. 25 trails will be groomed for tomorrow for a grand total of 115 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Currently, it is sunny and 47 degrees at the summit of Sterling. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for cloudy skies with a chance of rain and a high of 54 degrees.

Fun on Morse Mountain

Garden Path with Madonna in the background
Yellow Cat’s Lair is a short glade run off of the Magic Learning Trail.
I just had to share, because I found it funny. It is two dinosaurs wearing goggles and having a snowball fight!

Today was another great day on the slopes. I broke out my old carving snowboard and made some runs on the Village Lift this morning. I was a little rusty, but it all came back to me. I was feeling better even after my first run. It was so much fun to link carved turns on the fresh corduroy! I look forward to getting back out on my Burton Alp again in the near future.

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We have 76 out of 78 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Surface conditions are machine groomed and packed powder with average base depths of 16 to 54 inches. 33 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Goat Path, Snow Snake, and Smugglers’ Alley for a grand total of 143 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Currently it is partly sunny and 17 degrees at the summit of Sterling with winds of 0 to 5 mph. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for partly sunny skies with a high of 32 degrees. We have our Free Family Fun Race this weekend on Lower Madonna Liftline from 11 am till 2 pm.

Fun on Morse Mountain

High five from the Lift Attendant at mid-station of the Mogul Mouse’s Magic Lift
Snow Sport University Snowboard Instructor Christina on Garden Path

Mogul Mouse’s Magic Lift is designed for kids. The chair height when loading and unloading is lower to make it easier for the kids. The lift also operates at a slower speed to give the kids more time when loading. It is made for kids, but can be used by adults also. It is great for beginners of any age. The slower speed allows more time to prepare for loading the chair. The unload ramp at mid-station and at the top are small, which also makes unloading easier. The unload ramp on the Village Lift is a little bigger, so if it is your first time going to the top of Morse you might want to use Mogul Mouse’s Magic Lift. The photo at the top of this post shows a high five. The Lift Attendants give high fives to the kids who are going by mid-station and are headed to the top. It is a wonderful gesture by the lift attendants to acknowledge that the students have graduated to the summit of Morse.

Snow Snake is open

Winter Wonderland
Ride and Ski
Cruising

I love Snow Snake. It has always been one my favorite runs. I can remember back when I was a kid learning to ski on Morse Mountain. You would take the skills you learned on Garden Path and test them on Snow Snake. Snow Snake will let you know if you are ready to go to the upper mountains.

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with all 8 lifts operating. We now have 74 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Surface conditions are machine groomed and packed powder with average base depths of 14 to 50 inches. 30 trails will be groomed for tomorrow, including Smugglers’ Alley, Snake Bite, and Snow Snake for a grand total of 124 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Skier’s right on Upper FIS will be groomed tonight from Catwalk down to Dan’s Ford. Dan’s Ford down to Times Square will be groomed full width. Currently, it is cloudy and 20 degrees at the summit of Sterling with winds of 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for partly sunny skies with a slight chance of a snow shower late in the day and a high of 30 degrees. Free Family Fun Race tomorrow on Lower Madonna Liftline from 11 am till 2 pm.
