Grateful Shred

Rockin’ Ron for Hugh. Grateful to get on the slopes today – my best ski day – so far this season! … and my first time this season on M1!! How about this run of bumps, woods, and groomers: Upper FIS (pre-snowmaking – all natch) to Lower Doc’s to Goat Path to lower Upper FIS to Mulcahy’s Link to Lower FIS! Can skiers shred the gnar like snowboarders? If so, it was a Grateful Shred.

This man has a mono ski! It’s Phil Marshall and the Deputies chasing down the fresh tracks. BTW Phil designed the website you’re now looking at.
Snowmakers are busy on Lower Chilcoot. They’ll be on Upper FIS tomorrow.
I also got to rip the dips for a “compression run”: Upper Drifter to Shuttle to Lower Rumrunner to Link to Sterling.

What a day!

Summit of Sterling with sunny skies
Trail pick of the day
Getting my groove back

It was 39 degrees and sunny on top of Sterling first thing this morning. I knew that it would not take long before we had some spring conditions. I started my day off snowboarding on Morse Mountain. I broke out my old carving board and had a blast on Garden Path. The soft snow makes it easy to carve. I then switched to skis and headed for the upper mountains. The snow was getting soft on the upper mountains also. Ski Patrol dropped ropes on Hangmans’ Drop, Thomke’s Express, Shire, Bermuda, Father Bob’s, Gary B’s, and Upper Pipeline. The Madonna I lift was on wind hold most of the day, but it opened this afternoon. I could not wait to ski Upper FIS. It was groomed last night and then set in the sun until the Madonna I Lift opened. It was smooth, covered with soft snow, and just plain wonderful. I hurried to the bottom, got back on the Madonna I Lift and skied it again!

Tomorrow we plan to have top to bottom skiing and riding on all 3 mountains with 6 lifts operating, including the Madonna I lift. We have 70 trails open with terrain for all ability levels. Surface conditions are spring and machine groomed with average base depths of 16 to 56 inches. 25 trails will be groomed for tomorrow for a grand total of 115 acres of freshly groomed terrain. Currently, it is sunny and 47 degrees at the summit of Sterling. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for cloudy skies with a chance of rain and a high of 54 degrees.
