THE BEST OF WINTER 2014-2015
Conversion to high efficiency snowgun fleet complete. The addition of 156 new high efficiency tower guns and one additional fan gun signals the completion of Smugglers’ conversion to a fleet comprised fully of high efficiency snowguns. This will be Smugglers’ third consecutive Winter of snowmaking improvements. 250 new guns were incorporated into the fleet over the previous two Winter seasons. The high efficiency guns yield faster terrain coverage and quick refreshing of trails for the best possible onslope experience. More snow can be made at a wider temperature range, improving early and late season coverage with greatly reduced energy costs.
These snowmaking additions are part of a comprehensive effort to enhance Smugglers' snowmaking product for skiers and riders. Work has begun on a new pipeline for water access to support an expansion in snowmaking coverage from the current 60 percent to 80 percent coverage. That expansion will take place over the next three seasons. The pipeline project will increase conservation flows at the resort's existing withdrawals. The pipeline project is expected to cost about $3 million and be completed in Fall 2015.
Other news Skiers and riders at Smugglers' will enjoy a new Waffle Cabin serving sweet snacks at the base of the Madonna 2 lift.
Snow Sport University introduces Trail Blazers ski and snowboard instructional programs for 5 and 6 year olds, with the option of full day ski or ride camp or two hour lessons. 3 and 4 year olds will remain together as Discovery Dynamos in full day ski or ride camp.
Why the change? Smugglers' children's program instructors have observed that 5 and 6 year olds tend to be more independent and ready to take on new adventures, and may already have skiing or riding experience. Physical development with children these ages is typically further along in terms of coordination, strength, and balance. A Summer program pairing 5 and 6 years olds has been successful, and applying this model to Winter programs will better support this age group.
Snow Sport University offers a complimentary mountain tour for adult levels 5-9. These daily morning sessions provide an introduction to Smugglers' three mountains and their secret stashes.
Programs launched last Winter further expanded Smugglers' wealth of activities for families.

Introduction to snowboarding in Treasures nursery. As part of active play at Treasures nursery, kids try out fun activities that encourage development of the muscle memory necessary for snowboarding. Indoor games, balance boards and obstacle course encourage balance and movements relative to this sport. Outdoors, the playground area at Treasures provides great flat terrain conducive to this type of activity. Innovative Burton Snowboards Riglet boards will be used indoors and out. Riglet reels affixed to the boards allow the kids to get pulled around while getting a feel for sliding on snow. With Smugglers' progression teaching experience, the next stop for these little riders will be the Riglet Park for ages 3-6 on the learning hill.
