THE BEST OF WINTER 2013-2014

Smugglers' is honored to be ranked as the #1 overall resort in the Eastern U.S. and Canada by SKI Magazine readers, in addition to being recognized as #1 for family vacations for the 15th year. Other top ten rankings include overall satisfaction, service, value, lodging, snow, terrain variety & challenge, grooming, terrain parks, off-hill activities, scenery, weather, digital presence and character.

We're adding 100 more new HKD tower snow guns which will serve intermediate and advanced terrain through placement on Smugglers' Alley on Sterling Mountain, and Upper FIS, Chilcoot, and Link on Madonna Mountain (plus a few other trails). In some areas, these guns will be new additions to the trails, in other areas the new guns will be replacing older models of tower guns so that we'll be able to more efficiently make snow, cover terrain faster, and refresh it quickly for the best possible onslope experience. We've also purchased two tower fan guns; one will be placed for additional coverage on our learning area at Sir Henry's and the other will be placed at the Sterling base.

These snowmaking additions are part of a continuing effort to enhance our snowmaking product for skiers and riders. Last winter's snowmaking investment of over $1,000,000 in enhancements brought an additional 150 high efficiency tower guns and a new electric compressor to Smugglers'. This investment allowed more snow to be made at a wider temperature range, improving early and late season coverage with greatly reduced energy costs. Guns were positioned on selected intermediate trails on Sterling Mountain, intermediate Lower Liftline on Madonna Mountain, and beginner trails Lower Liftline and Log Jam on Morse Mountain.

New programs this year will further expand Smugglers' wealth of activities for families. A cabin cat ride will offer exciting exploration and breathtaking views of the resort's mountain terrain from the comfort of an enclosed cabin on a groomer. A mini snowmobile track on Sir Henry's will allow young children to operate their own snow sled.

A new activity at our nursery Treasures introduces 2 1/2 to 3 year olds to snowboarding. As part of active play at Treasures, kids will have the opportunity to try out fun activities that encourage development of the muscle memory necessary for snowboarding. Indoor games, balance boards and obstacle course will encourage balance and movements relative to this sport. Outdoors, the playground area at Treasures provides great flat terrain conducive to this type of activity. Innovative Burton Snowboards Riglet boards will be used indoors and out. Riglet reels affixed to the boards allow the kids to get pulled around while getting a feel for sliding on snow. With Smugglers' progression teaching experience, the next stop for these little riders will be the Riglet Park for ages 3-6 on the learning hill.

Natural feature terrain park on Madonna Mountain
A natural feature terrain park for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders at Smugglers' opened on the Knight's Revenge glade that crosses the Link trail on Madonna Mountain between Lower Rumrunner and Lower Madonna Liftline. Knight's Revenge contains log slides, bank turns, log rolls, rock wall jumps, a rainbow, and loads of rails, ending at a quarter pipe wall ride at the Rumrunner trail junction. This freestyle playground in the woods typically holds more than twenty features in addition to the varied terrain and rock jumps provided by Mother Nature.

Snow Sport University women's clinic
A program offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays for women focuses on the mechanics of how the female body moves on snow in order to enhance skills. Female coaches lead participants in lighthearted and fun learning sessions. This clinic, held from 10:15 am to 2:00 pm, is for all levels and includes lunch.

Winter Adventures for teens
In two-hour morning Snow Sense sessions, intermediate skiers and riders ages 16-20 explore the mountain with a guide while learning to read conditions and terrain and picking up technique and skills tips along the way. After lunch, the group will head back outdoors to enjoy an afternoon adventure: ice climbing (Thursday), backcountry snowshoeing (Friday), ice canyon Via Ferrata (Saturday) and winter survival tips (Sunday).

Evening trek pairs "Sweets and Snowshoes"
Each Wednesday evening a guided trek for adults departs the Nordic Center and follows a network of gently rolling snowshoe trails to a handcrafted pavilion in the woods. At the pavilion, trekkers relax in the glow of a campfire and candlelight while enjoying a warm beverage and samplings of three desserts. The trek is 30 - 40 minutes each way, and appropriate for all levels of experience.

A solar-powered Village Lodge
Continuing the environmental stewardship initiatives that have earned the Resort an Environmental Leader designation, Smugglers' installed 35 solar trackers in May 2012 with a 150-kilowatt capacity that are projected to offset the energy use of the Village Lodge, home to a deli, pizzeria, entertainment venue and lounge, and Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop. In their first year of operation (May-April), the trackers produced just over 213,000 kilowatt hours (kWh), well over the 205,000 kWh initially projected.
