Smugglers' Notch Resort is center of influence for Flyin Ryan Hawks Scholarship Foundation Foundation supports dreams of local youth in memory of extreme skiing athlete Hawks
In Fall 2011, when Smugglers' sales and promotions coordinator Tommy Smith was promoting the resort at a local ski movie premiere, he chatted briefly with a man who, just a few minutes after their conversation, stood up to say a few words to the crowd. That man was Peter Hawks, father of Ryan Hawks, a world champion extreme skier from Vermont who died in March 2011 at age 25 as a result of a crash during the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour. In memory of his son and his zest for life, Peter Hawks founded the Flyin Ryan Hawks Foundation, and Hawks’ remarks that night about the foundation’s positive message for young athletes caught Smith’s attention.
With the support of resort management, Smith worked to establish Smugglers’ as a center of influence supporting the foundation and its work to further youth athletes’ dreams. Smith says, "We have a lot of gifted and passionate youth in the Smugglers' Notch area. Not all of these kids have the financial means necessary to fully invest in their adventure sport. I felt so strongly that Smuggs' would be a great partner for the Flyin Ryan Foundation because every kid deserves an opportunity to pursue their dream. The scholarships that the Flyin Ryan Foundation produces will level the financial playing field, and give the opportunity to grow as and athlete and as a person. Smuggs has always been there for youth and family, it's a perfect fit.”
The elements of the foundation’s mission statement are: To inspire young people to live every day, all day and never stop exploring life; to expose them to the world of outdoor adventure; and to teach Ryan’s principles of living and core values. Ryan’s core principles were discovered on his computer after his death and include retaining passion for life and life’s adventures; being the best you can be in relationships with family and friends; looking out for others and your surroundings; working hard; and living simply.
As a center of influence, Smuggs is a location to register as a contributing ambassador and the resort supports with season passes athletes of the Smugglers' Notch Ski and Snowboard Club who apply and are awarded scholarships with the Foundation. Youth athletes in the club participate in training programs for snowboarding, skiing, or freestyle. The club’s coaches have implemented the foundation’s core principles and code of conduct with their youth members.
The foundation provides scholarships based on the applicants’ character, financial need, passion for their sport, and athletic potential and performance.
